i am looking at doing a type 4 donk into my 65 with an upright conversion. do you know if there is a kit available that allows me to fit one without
cutting anything out of the engine bay? and i will be looking at making a custom exhaust to poke out in front of yhe rear whells. i have not done much
with the type 4 motor, so i am hoping you can give me some advice please fella's,
cheers, josh

Sorry, a Type 4 motor won't fit in a '65 body shell without clearancing the engine bay. The Type 4 is quite a bit larger than a Type 1 engine.
You'll have to trial-fit the bare long block, make measurements all around and then compare with the fully assembled engine to see where you'll have
to cut. Certainly you'll have to cut away the body at the left and right sides to fit the heads in; and probably at the rear to allow for the extra
length of the big motor.
Basically you're trying to fit a big block engine into a small block body...
hey Josh, no cutting needed as long as the oil coolers not in the stock spot which it wont be with an uprigth conversion anyway
if the upright kits fitted and its got a moded input shaft bearing (type4s have a longer input shaft) just bolt in and turn the key
I'm with Joel, the type IV head to head is actually shorter/narrower than a type I, and some upright kits keep the stock cooler location so beware which you use but definately no choppy choppy.
cheers guys, do you know where i can get the kits from?
Upright Kits for type IVs are pretty sorted now.
Sharpbuilt QLD can do the upright type1 fan style or the upright porsche fan style.
CSP Germany do a type1 upright fan kit which is very slick.
Jake Raby in the US does a very refined upright type 1 fan conversion kit called the DTM (Down The Middle).
Joe Cali provides some excellent detailed instructions for a diy conversion.
CSP Germany does a stainless steel exhaust for type IVs into type 1, its called the CSP Python, and it would give a jelly fish a horn....
As for the type IV engine, steer clear of the Vanagon 2 litre engine, its crankcase breather tower doesnt adapt easily. It can be done, I did it
recently, but would have preferred not to.
Lots of good info on the net. Do lots of research.
In fact it was my proposal a while back to create a new category on this site. Clearly its badly needed.... !!!
thanks guys, thats freat stuff! I am a little concerned that the option pictured would be too high to fit into the split engine bay, but I will be
doing the ring around to get more info,
cheers to all!!!
a sharpbuilt kit will fit your bus, you will need a 210 max flywheel, not 228, too big, even with 210 you need to clearance the bellhousing on a swinger, if its not irs then you need to unpick the endring off a cluthplate and put it onto the kombi clutch or you will have fork dramas, dont try fitting an assembled motor in either, you need to assemble the top stuff after the blocks bolted in
fits with sharpbuilt kit, and a flywheel from rod penrose ,200mm type4 12lb conversion one but needed to be modified for spigot bearing.
And with a custom tuned length 1 5/8 extractors .
engine is a ex fuel injected GE with hydraulic's.
And the complete motor can be removed without taking anything off inc muffler , carbs.
thats what I'm after klaus!!! where did you get that exhaust from? and what carbs are you using? will 40 idf webbers jetted for a 1916 be enough?
or kadrons?
cheers, josh
IDF's will be fine. Also 210 OR 215 clutch and flywheel will work no prob .
As for jetting , just be carefull that it is not running lean as 1916 jetting willl be close but worth checking quickly after running as a seized
motor will not be happy days
Andrew
exhaust was by me and about 8 mandrel u bends, 40 idfs with update kit . jetting at the moment is 50 idles 153 or there about mains (reamed) and a
cheap ass facet copy fuel pump. cant remember airs
the motor has been on the dyno and made 55hp sic and 122ftlbs all down low as its stock as and has at a guess 2-300 000 kms on it .
heads had burnt ex valves blown head gaskets and cracked ex ports , now it runs stock 2ltr heads ports cleaned up a bit and valves lapped with scat
single hd springs and retainers.
very nice to drive and plenty of power to push the bus along and the 1500 beetle box has perfect ratios.
excellent!! robin loves telling me about your bus down there at the uni!
what dizzy are you running there? and would you consider making up another exhaust for me? is that carb linkage an upright one or a type 4 linkage? I
have almost all the bits to do the conversion. just need the kit from sharp and that exhaust. that is exactly what I am after.
i will have to get down there and hear/see that panel for myself one day! have you got a u tube slide of the van?
cheers for the advice Klaus! I appreciate it!
I copied the exhaust from a csp python one, carb linkage is all cb perf and dizzy is 009 with dis x from rod penrose.
labour time on ex is big, easier to run heater boxes with thunderbird setup then you can have a heater .
ooop's, I meant to say 40 dcn webers. will that be different from idf?
bugger, i've just found out that the $500 I spent on DCN webers is for nothing as I need IDF's. when you decide you need a new project and you wanna
do a new exhaust Klaus, sell me yr old one. Rod raved about how good it is! He has a kit for me, now I just need carbs and exhaust and I'm there!
cheers
kit he has is the fibreglass bits you also need tinware elec fuel pump, ext oil cooler . the ex cost me just for parts i think $400. with a free old muffler that i cut apart and re did , a custom muffler is $300 alone no bends or flanges. from the ex guys supplier. and on a stock 2ltr it doesnt make much diff . I made one for the next motor which will be flat tops "h" beam rods , 1800 heads and big hyd cam.
I've got a facet electric fuel pump, what tinware is needed? do you mean the doghouse fan shroud? got few of them and I have an external oil cooler
that was on another motor. I will have a look at getting an exhaust made up untill you decide to sell me a Klaus special, he he! how much was the
dizzy set? So if you are building another motor, will you sell that one? I spose you will swap all the external stuff over!
cheers for your help on this one!
Like I said and requested in the past..... we need a dedicated 'Type IV into Type 1' forum....
If we can have a forum for ICE (In Car Entertainment) ...surely we can have one for 'Big Block' conversions..???
My last request got moved and buried, so I ask again.......???
another forum would be good.
front and rear tinware , ignition was about 450 from memory maybe less.
i tend to keep all my type 4 motors and this one has alot of kms on it.
found an exh pic there is a couple of stub pipes missing from one pic. it has changed slightly since then too.
that is bloody impressive Klaus!!!
I am being talked into a 1916 for more HP, but your pics keep pulling me back to the type 4 motor!! I need to pull up alot of hills and I think I just
need a good torquie motor. that type 4 looks like the right thing!! Do you think it would be more worth while to run a larger oil cooler under the car
instead of at the fan shroud? maybe with an electric fan?
cheers, josh
I'm running the stock type 4 cooler in the type 1 position and am yet to see temps above 180f. i also dont have the front engine tin fitted (gearbox end) mainly because of the webers so they get enough cool air

cheers Klaus,
did that mount need to be made up by you or will I get something in my kit as standard? I am thinking I might run a thermo fan to an oil cooler under
the car.
just found out that my kads are buggered. so now I am looking at selling my set of dcn webers and trying to get a set of kads for the type 4 or a set
of IDF's for it.
Getting there slowly
btw, hope your not under the dam, i hear you couls have water views ...
hey mate, get a set of dels. they seem to run better from what ive been told. also try talking to richard at vforce about the t4
"because the powers that be didnt want to do anything about it"......powers that be..!! ??..
That sounds like pretentious crap Barls.
And I havent even started to harp on.
How hard is it to make a decision.....????
Clearly there is a demand for a type IV conversion forum.
wise dub if you want more info about the conversion try shoptalk they have a section for it
yeah shoptalk is great but the yanks have have a wider selection of engine core's to use like the 411's and porsches, unlike us who are stuck with
ap and cj gd ge ones and the 1700 ce? , out of busses .
for doing the conversion I think more than enough info has been given by a few of us here who have done it on a budget. So keep asking Q's and
the thread will keep going.
I also put a type 4 in a type 3 , dont mind the timber box around it
