Brake Slave Cyls.... What are they!
1500S - May 29th, 2010 at 10:06 AM
Can someone ID this slave cylinder. I bought it in good faith of evil bay as Left Front Type 3 drum slave cylinders, however, they are nothing like
the 64 ones. Also, it was two of the same, not the left hand set.

Looks like a slave cylinder for a hydraulic clutch to me, brake slave cylinders are almost always double-ended (one cylinder drilled all the way
through with a piston in each end). Obviously air-cooled VWs don't have a hydraulic clutch so it's from some mystery car. Complain to eBay or look
for a part number so you can re-list them.

Definitely a brake cyl of some type similar to Type 3 but smaller in length . Type 3 front brakes have one slave cyl per shoe. These ones are only
slightly different centres from mount holes to brake line/bleeder boss. Maybe a 63 Type 3 or earlier but I have no ifo plus they are useless to me
anyhow.

Well, you learn something every day. How much smaller are they? Is it possible that they're just really badly made reproductions of Type 3 ones which
got the bolt holes wrong?

You've got to get away from those primitive Type 1 cars. Yep Type
3 fronts are totally different to Bugs.
Not a chance they are a bit wrong. The link tube holes are in a totally different place to the 64 Type 3. See pic.

I did have a Type 3, but it was a '73 with disc brakes, so that didn't teach me anything about the early girls and their primitive drum brakes!
Personally I would complain to the seller first and ask for an exchange or refund as they are not 'as described'. If they don't want to help you
then complain to eBay. Good luck!

Too late to contact them as I've had them around for near 12 months. Bought them with the thoughts I may need them one day which has now arrived!
If they can be identified, then they may suit someone on here.

Never seen anything like that...
I presume Your 1500S has two slave cylinders for each wheel..
on the front...
and that these look similar to yours...??
If You are like Me Dallas,
I check My Evil buys months later...
then I can't remember who I bought them off...
and its too late to complain to evil buy... lol
which it usually is... lol
Do You know if Australian made early type 3s had brakes like your 1500S ??

Hi Grumble. Yes, I think they are off an "up to 63" Type 3 but not sure. They are 22mm bore and the link hole looks like it's where the 63 model
is although I think I saw somewhere that early ones were a smaller bore. I can use the pistons etc but housings are scrap (to me!!) unless someone
wants them.

I'm a bit like that too Lee. When they arrived I had a quick look at one and threw it on the shelf for a later needed day!
As far as I know, all OZ type 3s had the same fronts as the "real" 1500 S from '64 until the disks arrived in '68 or '69. I've never owned
anything earlier than a 64. I'd swap to disks except that I want to keep it all original. I've got new rears but I'll have to sleeve the fronts
to avoid future hassles. I think I know someone who can do that job for me at a reasonable price.

Hi Dallas,
the factory manual shows those ones to be the "early" wheel cylinders.
From chassis number 0027850 they increased the wheel cylinder size from 20.64 to 22.2 on models 31 and 34,
although model 36(wagon?) had this size from the first model(chassis 0009330).
This coincided with a master cylinder with 36mm stroke as opposed to the previous one with 33 strocke(same diameter).
Of note was that these early cars only had 231mm diameter brake drums front and rear.
(identified by a swirl pattern on the outside of the drum, instead of the later straight ribs).
From Chassis number 0221975 all type 3s were fitted with the upgraded("reinforced") brake system to account for the higher top speed.
master cylinder was reduced in size from 20.64 to 19.05,
variant wheel cylinders in the rear reduced from 25.4 to 23.8mm(!?),
and brake drums front and rear increased from 231mm to 248mm.
....which is when they changed the front wheel cylinder design..(and all the other brake associated parts(even the stub size from memory!)

Thanks for the full info Dave. When I got them they were sold as early Type 3 but no numbers. With the bores being 22 but the shorter cyls they
would be the early wagon ones for the smaller drums.
Now it's time to do a full rebuild on all parts as the master cyl has a bit of a weep even though it was a NOS one about 7 years back. Nothing lasts
these days!!

resleeved. The car is original, needs repainting but has been in the family since new.Cheers Les

In the end it's far easier and quicker to sleeve the originals Les. Seeing it was a miserable here with the rain today I bored and sleeved them and
they are ready for new innards.............. and it cost me zero $$ as well!!
Maybe someone on here wants the two early ones.
