"suits 1600 auto"
the one I have been offered is....0231178009,
"suits 1100 25hp and 1200 36hp"
are they the same unit?
"No"
You will probally find that the timming specs on it will be different. I have just been thru this with my 1600, I bought a 009 and that does not go with the 34 pic 3 carbi ,had flat spots and rough idle changed back to a 0231137039 with the electronic conversion fitted and all is sweet.
I picked up the distributor imformation from the web site
"the old volks home"

So 57 oval this sounds like what I'm trying to rectify, the rough idle and flat spots on acceleration, but the way I read it I need to couple it up with the correct Carbie, I have a 30 pict-2 carbi, so would I be better to retain the "034" dizzie and fit an electronic ignition or start from scratch with all new units, what type of electronic conversion did you use, I have done a search here and there are a few types recomended, only one I can see not to touch is the Empi.

You can fix the problem with the flat spot and the rough idle by soldering up the hole in the base butterfly of your pic 3, or so i read on this very interesting site " Rob and Daves air cooled pages" however i opted to try and keep what is supposed to be there, there. this way i keep the correct timming degrees etc for the engine. the unit I used in my dizzy was a no brand I got from wolfsberg west for about $45 when he was at the SA day of the VW. very easy to fit, then stripped and cleaned the carby, tuned the carby as per the instuctions on the same web site Rob and Daves and the old girl has never run better. Only need to replace spark plug leads now as i still have a liittle miss when you take the revs up whilst sitting still ,minor but i might as well get it spot on. check out the pages as I said some good reading here is a link http://www.vw-resource.com/index.html  cheers
