Is this the problem??
Old Hutcho - May 31st, 2010 at 12:44 PM

To all the techos out there.

I have a 1916, 110 engle, twin kads, Bandido heads, extractors on a quiet pack.

Used to go like a shot. Good torque, easy to cruise, nice car.

I re kitted the Kads recently. Just before a dyno day. I was shocked to find that I had halved my horsepower!!!

The dude on the dyno reckoned I had major issues inside the engine and suggested I replace the cam which he reckoned MAY have been the issue. (As in lobe worn down)

So I drove it home. Went like a black dog. No power. It has 155psi compression in all cylinder. The cam lift has been measured in the car and it appears to be ok. So I am not pulling it down just yet.

Got into the carbs this morning and the accelerator pump delivery tube has a small ball under it. One was not seized but there was a lot of crud and stuff which was keeping the ball jammed up off the seat. Which means (correct me if I am wrong) the pump metering is now askew??

Anyway is this sufficient to cause me major power loss on one side of the engine. (from the two dyno days I did with the same engine and carbs I lost almost exactly half engine power).

All suggestions appreciated.

unkitted good kitted bad a bit of a clue there i think
a big pull apart and a good clean and a b low through all jets AND ALL GALLERIES IN THE CARBY BODY this is nearly always forgotten

Old Hutcho - May 31st, 2010 at 03:51 PM

Greedy

Point taken. However, I did pull the carbs right down, solid flush with degreaser/carb cleaner, light blow through and back together again. All jets and galleries flowing freely. Including the accellerator tube. The question really is. If the ball under the accelerator tube doesnt seat properly, what effect does that have. I am hearing accelerator pump not delivering correct quantities of fuel as some fuel drains back down into the pump? Is that pie in the sky stuff?

Is it farting and popping

My thoughts if it was fuel it would be making all sorts of noises

I am a bit confused as in how it is behaving??

Is it down on power or is about to die???

like - is it driveable?? just with 1/2 the power??

Old Hutcho - May 31st, 2010 at 07:46 PM

VW54

Ive had the Kads for a long time now. I have had no probs with them so far. I am not even sure they are my problem now. Just clutching at straws.

pod.

The balance is fine. Tubes all new and clear.

Hi

Could it be a blocked muffler? I had a glass packed muffler block up once and it really cut down the power.

SteveNow THERES something I hadnt looked at. I had a custom one made by a local mujffler shop. Never thought to stick my head in there.
Will do so tomorrow.

Yep get rid of the tin cans and put some decent carbs on it, disturbing them has stuffed them, in reality there not great carbs to start with, your lucky they lasted this long.(but what do I know). Any advice on the forum is risky.

when you rekitted the carbs was that including new jets, where they the same size and dont mean where they stamped the same.
also when the carbs went back on how where they tuned, by ear by smell or by gas meter.
gas meter tells alot about whats going with the mixture

vw54 - June 1st, 2010 at 05:49 PM

I no the Kads can work well BUT they do play up and require someone who knows linkages and carbies to tune them

Hows yr ignition system do u have 009 or similar

try an electronic module ( not the cheap chinese one either ) and get the ignition right so it dosent vary

Also get a length of plastic tube one end in yr ear and the other to check for suction vacuum leaks round the mainifolds they tend to come undo cause there top heavy and vibrate with the engine movement
