I got a very stuck bolt holding the fan to the generator. I just need to get some massive torque on it.

But whats the usual technique to 'lock it up' from spinning so i can crack it open without damage?

Should i seam weld the fan while i'm at it? or will that cause unnecessary balancing concerns for a procedure thats not entirely necessary for my application? I'm sticking with the stock belt drive.

The way I did mine was to stand the whole generator assembly up vertically in a vice and then clamp the generator pulley in the vice and undo the nut. This is easiest to do if you use a rattle gun (impact driver) as it will get the nut off without spinning the generator shaft much. In fact, after the fan had already been removed, I got the pulley nut off simply by having someone else hold the pulley tightly by hand and then zapping the nut off with the rattle gun. This would certainly not be possible using a breaker bar!

The above method in the vice works OK, if you take the outer pulley off you will find a handy flat section to put in the vice jaws.

The nut is not usually torqued up that tight, the factory torque is only about 45 ft lb, maybe try some heat on the nut.

chris on the back side of the belt pulley there's 2 slots for a screw driver, that stops it from turning to undo the pulley nut, then like waveman said take the pulley half off and the shaft has 2 flats that can lock it in a vice, or put a big shifter on it if its still on the engine.

This old generator and fan are corroded and greasy as, but the bearings in the generator are brilliant. whisper quiet. i was going to just get an alternator, but if this unit works for the momrent, it will at least get me on the road and can upgrade when the finances allow.

Will get stuck right in. vice and breaker bar it is lol.

just watch out you dont snap the woodruff key in half , as thats what happened to me because it was way to tight, but eventually got it off and put the alternator in
