How much to rebuild a 2lt engine...
My76Bay - June 6th, 2010 at 01:29 PM

My 76 camper's engine is making knocking noises and the local dub mechanic said it could result in serious damage to an otherwise solid motor. The quote to rebuild in Canberra was around $5,500. This seems high. What could I expect to pay to save this engine? I would love to tinker myself but A: I’m not that good and B: I am renovating a house which puts the Kombi well down my wife’s (long) list of priorities – financial and/or time. Any suggestions. The bus itself has only done 136K since new.

that figure is about right

That is a shame... but thanks.

Are the camper engines the same as all the other such as 1300 and 1600 etc. Split case, 4 barrels and heads.

barls - June 6th, 2010 at 02:09 PM

they are, but the parts are much more expensive.

I'd swap you your 2L block for a good 1800 block but we're a bit far apart.

My76Bay - June 6th, 2010 at 02:12 PM

Clinker42, I have no idea. What I have in the camper is a stock standard 2lt twin carb... Why do you ask!

My76Bay - June 6th, 2010 at 02:17 PM

Joels72Lowlight... Thanks. It is an option I had not considered. I would like to put off having to consider it for a while yet but if it comes to bailing on the bus it may be an option.

With 136,000 k from new it will most likely be a top end problem, loose valve seat?
I certainly wouldn't be driving it if it knocks/rattles.

Thanks to all for input. :spin:

I would shop around if I were you. CBB have exchange 2000cc long motors $2790.00 + gst.

Give them a call 47229313.

I have an engine in there at the moment having a top end rebuild.

Hope this helps.

Quikbug. Thanks, I will call them. It is a new lead. Out of interest, what is the ball park $ on your rebuild (if it is a similar engine..) My preferance is to keep my engine. cheers.

someone is selling a 1800 motor in bits for sale

is this a type 4 motor? cause thats a great price as it wouldnt even cover the parts in my rebuild which was over 4 years ago.

My76Bay - June 6th, 2010 at 03:39 PM

Thanks greedy53, but if I could reassemble an 1800 I would just as well rebuild the 2lt. One day I'll have time to tinker but can't see that day from here. cheers

I had my 2 ltr rebuilt, including new pistons and barrels, new heads, new clutch, replacement (s/h) camshaft, new lifters, all labour (inc. engine out/engine in), gaskets and fluids for a bit under $5000. The crankshaft and bearings were all OK, so you could consider this a "major top-end" rebuild. This would apply to a 1700/1800/2 litre engine.

QuikBug - June 6th, 2010 at 06:10 PM

Barls it is definately for a type 4.

My engine is receiveing a top end rebuild with mild port job by Mike. My quote was $2207.00 + Gst. I am doing all the fitting myself.

Best would be to call CBB to confirm the prices, I am sure they could do your motor if you wanted.

Is it drive in drive out??
Consider having to pull and replace the motor

There is a HEAP for tin and bits compared to a type 1

You sit in front of a bare T4 in the morning and i bet a bucket of Stellas it aint in the bus at going home time

71-BEETLE-SEDAN - June 6th, 2010 at 07:00 PM

Put a subaru in it.

vw54 - June 6th, 2010 at 07:02 PM

make sure it includes NEW cyclinder heads as these are un rebuildable
these MUST be replace with new heads as the failure rate in very HIGH
