lead addative?
Ollie - July 22nd, 2010 at 05:00 PM

Hey guys, I've bought myself an Aussie '76 Beetle and I was wondering whether I had to use a lead additive when filling up? Cheers!

bajachris88 - July 22nd, 2010 at 06:29 PM

No need for addtive for a late model. valves in the later engine heads are designed specifically for unleaded petrol.

helbus - July 22nd, 2010 at 07:03 PM

VW engines are fine for unleaded from the start of the 70's. You won't even need high octane or premium if your engine is stock. Don't use any ethanol E10 etc. blend fuels in it though. Ethanol is not suitable for carburettor engines. You need to have a fuel injected engine with O2 sensor to use and burn Ethanol blends properly.

That said, it wont hurt to put a bit of valvesaver product in the tank once every 10 or 20 times you fill up.

and here we go again.LOL.:spin:

Joel - July 22nd, 2010 at 07:11 PM

When i filled up at the woolies caltex servo today I noticed they have put stickers on all the bowsers stating that regular unleaded wont be availble after 27th of next month

I read in the NRMA open road a few months back unleaded will be totally phased out in australia sometime next year

ian.mezz - July 22nd, 2010 at 07:44 PM

Here is the thing that I have noticed, Is that vw owners don't drive them enough any way, to know what works and don't work in their cars:crazy::no::crazy:

I drive mine daily so I'll need to know :)

And as for Caltex, I work at a servo and this is happening to ours in a few weeks:(

helbus - July 22nd, 2010 at 08:47 PM

We drive our stock 1600TP Beetle daily, racking up about 5000 miles a year. In 5 years (25,000 miles) and only regular 91 unleaded we have been fine.

ian.mezz - July 22nd, 2010 at 09:01 PM

I ve worked on 1993 ish toyota Landcruisers 4wd with LPG fitted and they all seemed to take about 100000 before they burnt a valve.

colonel mustard - July 22nd, 2010 at 09:05 PM

darn gov are always just after more money. maybe i should just make a plastic fuel tank and run rubber lines through the car and run e10 with a bit of deisel and some kero and out of date spirits from a close down bar... or maybe I can just use sea water... its pretty much petrol now right?

PFFFT!

Snap Crackle Bang - July 22nd, 2010 at 09:50 PM

I'm going to distill the sugar coating from all the election promises we will be getting for the next month.
I'll need a bigger tank!

(Unfortunately the stuff we get from Labor is only good for moving forward.)

Hi
what they are doing, is phasing unleaded out and replacing it with what was called E10... now called unleaded with ethanol

Our new woolies and shell and caltex all have only unleaded with ethanol.... so I'm back to 95 or 98 octane RON
My beetle hates ethanol...

and I'm going to start using valve additive now...
ir won't hurt....

but unleaded is going in NSW..

ONLY UNLEADED WITH 10% ETHANOL...

normal unleaded being phased out already....

even though its got until next year... as a cut off date..

bajachris88 - July 22nd, 2010 at 10:32 PM

SO... are you guys saying that ANY unleaded fuel will in the next 12 to 24 months NOT EXIST at any fuel servo? including (eventually) the high octanes as well...?

SH#T! can u even run ur lawn mower or outboard on e10?...
Nah, u got to be joking....

right?

please be....

WHich scoundral would be paying up for liability claims to engine bay and cockpit fires due to corroded fuel lines causing petrol leaks??... let along engine damage..

Peter Leonard - July 22nd, 2010 at 11:05 PM

*cough*

I like to put flashlube in. It's cheap and makes the inside of my aircleaner tops this lovely golden colour after a few thousand ks. Say NO to valve seat recession. I know they're hardened, but when your heads cost 3 gazillian dollars it makes you sleep easier ;)

helbus - July 22nd, 2010 at 11:08 PM

No Chris. It is standard 91 unleaded they are talking about getting rid of. 95 and 98 will still be available as they are.

Joel - July 23rd, 2010 at 11:22 AM

yep 91 will be totally gone as of july 1 next year

Sucks for me cos nearly all japanese cars including Mazda prior to 2005 can't run on ethanol blends so I'm stuck running on premium now and given i average 30,000kms a year thats over $200 a year difference with todays prices

FCAI claim subarus after 1990 will run on ethanol but im not game to try it with a 35 year old metal tank so i'm stuck running the bug on premium too

Stupid money hungry government

bajachris88 - July 23rd, 2010 at 02:23 PM

ah thanks for clearing that up. i was scared for a sec. Thought the government was a little more crazier that expected.

Still silly though.

68AutoBug - July 24th, 2010 at 05:24 PM

Hi Chris...
No...
Normal unleaded without ethanol is being phased out in NSW.
other states???

and Woolworths/Caltex are changing over to Unleaded with ethanol 23rd next month.... but will 94 RON

IF they haven't changed over to 91 RON already...
most are selling 91 RON with ethanol now...

so, don't use any ethanol in mowers or boats etc...

but the 95 RON and 98 RON Premium fuels will still be around.

and they will NOT have any ethanol in them...

Not sure on other states???

LEE

ryana89 - July 24th, 2010 at 08:37 PM

I can't get over the stupidity of this move to only E10 and premium.
What is the logic behind it? Is there even any logic to it?
Fair enough if ALL cars designed to run on 91ron could take E10, but the simple truth is they cant?
The average border collie has more intelligence than this:rolleyes:

Theres fat, greedy and very wealthy man sitting in his office rolling in money right now:td:

General_Failure - July 24th, 2010 at 10:07 PM

I want to know what's happening on vic. If they aren't doing it I'm getting my petrol over the border!

Don't want to use e10 in my VW, although it would help with it running RICH. Might get it back to just running rich. Can't wait to get those jets.

68AutoBug - July 24th, 2010 at 11:12 PM

Its probably a Green thing...

Renewable energy... BUT

there are others that are saying -

Use Crops for FOOD - NOT FUEL..???

So, Who knows why...
Person selling all the ethanol would know???

LEE

PS: Feed the crops to the cows... lol
