hi guys the oval i bought has had someone sand down 50% of the panels prior to painting exept it never got painted and 5 years on the surface rust has
pitted the metal what is the best way to remove this.. wire wheel on a grinder does jack. any suggestions? experienced people please not " just paint
over it" sought of comment
cheers
is the panels in question removable? if so submerge them in diluted water and molasses.
Will eat nothing but the rust. Best way if you want to preserve metal. btw it can take a few weeks of submersion. The colder it is the longer it will
take.
If there's deep rust pitting then you probably don't really want to grind the metal down to the level of the pitting, as that may thin the panels out too much. The only other option then is chemical treatment and then filling with body filler or high-build.
Don't know where you are located, but Redistrip - Blacktown,NSW - can do the job. It is very expensive though, and the car would need to stripped
down to a BARE body shell so that it can be dipped in the tanks - a big job. Abrasive blasting - NOT soda - is another option.
You could try De-oxidine - a phosphoric acid based solution - after removing as much of the rust as possible with a 'purple' Scotchbrite wheel on a
drill. That's a lot of work, but a lot cheaper if it works.
Cheers, Greg
Use this company....i have had several cars done this way with NO problems.
They have before and after photo's of my CB on their website.

Make sure that you understand the process, before you have work done. Soda blasting will remove paint & grime, but WILL NOT REMOVE RUST An abrasive of some sort (or chemical) is needed to do this.
I still think you could try - on a small area, perhaps - the purple Scotchbrite wheel & Deoxidine (use rubber gloves).
thanks for the comments, for now i need to get a layer of primer over it so im going to use a wire wheel on most of the body (the body itself only has light surface rust on it) and then primer it and the fenders, boot and decklid im going to wire wheel back rust treat with por 15 and then primer over. As long as the body and doors and W decklid are in tact im happy... Ive been looking into a few moulded fenders. to fit my 30 inch rims in haha
