anyone know if a 68 beetle has the plates for the steering lock?

I have a 1968 ignition switch with a locking mechanism in the USA at a friends place..
does anyone know if the original steering shaft can be used??
or do I need to change shafts???

Lee, my 70 1500 bug had the slot in the column tube and the plates on the shaft, I'm pretty sure a 68 is still the same setup.
The shaft just has 2 plates around it with a gap between them and the tongue of the lock sits in the gap to lock the steering

well, some of them, must have had the holes...
although not in Australia...
even type 3s etc.. didn't have them [locked steering]
I had a 71 type 3 and 71 super back in the 70s...
neither had a locking ignition....
although the books etc from USA say they did have..

Lee, the 71 Type 3 must have had the lock fiddled with! All Type 3s had a locking column from 69 (maybe 68?). I've had 69, 70 and 72 models and all
had them working. The steering shafts had the plates to lock them on all that I've seen. There isn't a hole on any of them as the lock plunger is
about 7mm wide and 13mm long so has to drop into a slot. Even the early Australian produced Type 3s had the shaft with the bits on them, just the
actual locking ignition switch assembly missing and replaced with the el cheapo ones. Up to 1963 import German Type 3 N models had locking
steering and up to 1965 Imported 1500 S also. German import 66 Fastbacks also continued with the same early column which locked. I think they
continued in Europe with that one until about 68 when the angled switch replaced it.

Yes, I forgot that they couldn't have a hole in the shaft... lol
and maybe the type 3 did have the lock???
as it was a one owner 50,00 miles car..
1970s was a long time ago.... lol
I was deciding whether to continue and get the one in the USA sent over...

Is the Bug the same column casting as the 69 Type 3 with the angled switch.

Well, the switch is angled Dallas...
I do have the ignition steering part of a 71 super..
I'll see if they are similar...
I have another ignition switch from a 11/71 VW also...
part number 111 905 851L Locking type..
my non locking switch is 111 905 889 from a 68 beetle...
both only have three wires...

I know it's a pain Lee but can you take the wheel off and slide the casting off the column tube. That way you can see if the lock plates are on your
Bug steering shaft. Maybe the later switch will fit into your 68 casting.

My parents '68 that has been in the family since new has a locking steering column.... actually, this probably isn't a good example as the car was
purchased from the factory in Germany and imported privately. 
I'll wander over to my Brothers place and see if either of his '68's have a locking column as I am fairly sure that they were both Australian
spec..... I'll let you know....

Aus assembled bugs didnt have the steering lock till the start of the 72 model run, same time they got the bigger back window, 4 vent decklid, column
mounted wiper switch etc
You can chop and change parts though, I had a 74 locking barrel assembly in my 70 bugs column housing but the bezel is smaller and leaves a small gap

If you do move the steering wheel don't move it to the back seat, I had one of those and it was a pain in the ass, old girl friend thought I put it
there for her.

I have a German built '68 (born on April 1st!) and it doesn't have a steering lock (don't know about the plates though)

I don't know if mine has either...lol
but I bought a good ignition switch with a lock in the USA
and was a bit worried it wouldn't fit My beetle...
I'll have to check out mine...
