does anyone have any links to pages about type-4 upright conversion using type-1 cooling fan and alternator...
i have two t-4 engines one of them is Z open breather and the other one is 2L CU engine, i would like to build an engine based on the open breather
tower case and 2L displacement, i will also use the Z engine's camshaft (out of 411) and the stock 2L carbs 4 now untill i'll get my 40mm
webber's...
how much power such an engine can make out of the original carbs and heads..?
any help will be really appreciated...

I dont think you can use the CU case with a T1 shroud. The breather interferes. You can do a Porsche conversion though.
The CU case is what i have (Suth Efricun empart for Dr Rudy) and was a 80-83 aircooled vanagon motor
my engine will be based on the Z engine's crankcase which is iopen breather tower, i will use the stock 71mm crankshaft and 94mm pistons\liners
and 2L rods my engine will also use an early 411 camshaft and 1800 heads (41X34) 2L stock carbs and t-1 cooling fan
now, please place your bets on the estimated HP on this one...
and i am ready to hear any advices before the project begins...

I reckon with standard heads and carbies you should pull 70 - 75hp if everything is set up right.
I had an 1800 T4 upright in one of my beetles once - great conversion as they are so much more torquey a motor.
Would have been great if I had got a decent carby onto it......
I am in the midst of a type IV upright conversion using type I upright cooling (36hp dog house shroud). I just got all my cooling "tin wear"
(actually fibreglass) from http://www.sharpbuilt.com.au
Thus far has seen 71mm crank, stock rods and slightly oversize pistons (94.5 or 95 - not exactly sure). 215mm flywheel and clutch, stock reground cam
and all reciprocating parts balanced. My longblock is now assembled and I will start to fit up ancillaries. Haven't decided on dizzy yet though.
I will be running 40mm dellortos with CB performance throttle linkage.
It is getting to be an expensive engine (type IV stuff ain't cheap) - but the torque and longevity should be worthwhile in the end. It will be
mated to a 1500 s/a box with an adaptor collar so I can use the late throwout bearing - had to get this in from aircooled.net
hope this helps - no idea of how many ponies it will make though.

the CU engine and all the other 2L engines (aircooled) are pretty cheap around here, i can get a very good engine with the carbs and electronic
ignition for about 100$...
however, the 1.7\1.8 engines out of 411 and earlier type2 are pretty hard to get but i found a smoker 1700 Z engine longblock for 50$ and i think
it's a pretty good deal especially if the camshaft is in good shape and can be used to my project...
so this is the reason why i am building the type-4 engine, because i can get a lot of stuff around here and won't have to order from out of
country which will cost *ALOT* of money, the only thing i will order will be the mainfold to mate the weber idf's to the T-4 cylinder heads...
but i can have my engine running with the stock carbs until i can get some better carbs(webber??) anyway, if i can get my engine pulls around 80-90hp
it will be more than great and i will be damn safisfied....
it's also a cheap and small project to get some experience on building engines (i've never even opened a crankcase )
does anyone knows what the throat size on the 2L carbs?
