Need oomph?
oval TOFU - July 18th, 2003 at 12:31 PM

I know i do! I have a 54 oval with a
'later' model 1200 dak dak (one with a separate generator stand - 40hp?)still 6V and am languishng on the roads with not enough power. I dont want it to run 10 second 1/4 miles or anything, but i still want to get to the end of the 1/4 mile before dinner time if you know what i mean... I have the orig split case g'box and dont wanna change it - i was thinking of droping in a 1300 to boost power a little...

Whats all your opinions to do this on a budget? bigger carb? Twin carbs? a Judson s/charger? 12V conversion? paint my bug red and add speed holes?

Any comments would be gold!:bounce

This prolly should be in tech talk, but Judson s/charger would be good, but they are high maintenance! 12 Bigger carb, exhaust, all those should help! 12 volt as well!

N!

Forget a judson if you are on a budget. Cool way to get power into an oval, but way expensive.

What I would do is find a 1600 single port motor, and put that in. It wont shred your tyres, but they are a good torquey motor for a daily driver, and externally look almost identical (unless you are a vw nut) to the 40hp. The generator (if its 12V) is different, and the carby and air cleaner will be different, but at a glance it looks quite similar.

Wont harm your split case box either.

However - you might have to ask some other people on this forum about whether or not you would have to clearance the bellhousing on the gearbox, or fit a different flywheel. I'm not sure.

I would do the same - a 1600 single or twin port.

This will give you a 50% increase in power.
I would go and put a newer g'box in while you are at it and shelve the original along with the motor.

You would want to put a set of discs on the front while you are at it.

I wouldnt bother with big bore 1200 kits or Judsons. Only cost more money and not have the economy of spare parts and more effort.

I'm not sure if the split case gearbox has enough meat in it to clearance it for a 12V flywheel. You can run a 6V starter with 12 V though, just use a drop resistor or something for the solenoid, or convert it to a 12V solenoid.

A 1600 / 1640 would be the way to go for a budget motor. Would be heaps better than what you have now. But remember you have a 54, it will be worth more with the original crap motor. :(

get a good 1600 twin port with twin carbs it will be economical and practical!!

cheers mattie

If you want to stick with the 1200, I'd go original 36hp motor with balanced crank, abarth 4 tip exhaust and twin 28 solex carbs. (Thats what I'm gonna put in mine one day) Keep the split case box.

Or go with a std 1600 and 12v gearbox. change over the axles to wide 5.
Both will have about the same power. But the 36hp option will cost more bucks. But be old skool and cool.
My 2c worth

Yeh, i know it will be worth more with the original crap motor (which is sitting in my shed right now-hasnt been used for years by the looks of it!) The one i got in it is a 'later'1200 model... I've heard i can use a T3 6V flywheel with a 1600 engine... Does that i mean i have to get a 12V conversion too? or can i run a 1600 on 6V (sounds like a dumb idea i know!)

Cheers

Old skool and cool is what I want... How much do you reckon we is talking about for the 1200 option? and hows about a front disc conversion?

Cheers

Tofu, what's your intended use for this car? Do you drive it every day? Is it your transport to work? Do you live in the city or the country? Is it hilly where you live? How important is fuel economy?

I run a '68 bug with the stock 1500 single port engine and stock gearbox, and it is more than sufficient as a reliable and economical daily driver. I think the 1600 SP motor with a suitable gearbox would be your best option, with potential for further improvement. If you want more power, go for the twin-port motor, but I personally prefer the reliability and torque of the single-port. :thumb

tfou, I haven't costed it all up yet, But rough cut it would have to be close to 4 grand with a complete engine rebuild. (balanced crank would mean splitting the case, hence full rebuild) I remember reading in a VW mag about a guy who had done all this to a 36horser and it was good for 100mph. Fast enough in a VW Oval for me.
Stock 1600 SP (that I have in my oval now) is a lot cheaper option . No were near as kool as a hottie 1200 36'r

I previously had a 64 bug with a 1600 TP and that was very sufficient... even with drums on the front...

I intend to use the car about 5 times a week to get to uni etc and that sometimes involves using the freeway... so a bit more power would make that a lot safer with merging etc... I live in the suburbs/city and it gets a bit hilly (not a surrounding flat area) I'd like to keep the stock split case gearbox if possible - mainly coz theres nothing wrong with it (even 2nd syncro!) and if it aint broke... you know the rest... how much power gain would result from twin carbs and a merged exhaust? I know thats a broad question, but a ballpark figure would be good. Ease of boosting HP is a must as i dont have a lot of time to spare to do it myself nor $$ to get it done my someone else. Whats a good price for a sound 1500? or even a 1300?

Cheers

Yeh, i read about that guy too... i think it was more like 115 mph though (!) Have you still retained the split gearbox in yours? $4K is scarey! i think that'll have to wait... i dont wanna spend more than about $800...

tofu, or not tofu, that is the question

Grey 57 - July 20th, 2003 at 08:07 PM

tofu , mine has a 1200 or 1300 box in it, Full syncro.

Merged exhaust is good to do to a standard 1600. Nice gain in hp. Best thing you can do to any VW motor is free up the exhaust. As far as twin carbies go I have been told that you dont get that much gain with a 1600. Better off going with a larger single carb like a weber. I dont have twins on my oval. Was going to put them on but have been put off them a bit lately.
