Wheel question
KOM123 - July 18th, 2003 at 02:13 PM

Let me apologise first because I don't know the correct terminology. Wondering how hard it would be to pickup the cup shaped cover that I have illustrated in the picture below.

I'm missing one for one of my wheels, all other three are the same and intact. I've taken one of the wheels off the Kombi (76) that has one and it seems to sit inside the rim quite snugly (i.e. have to bash it a bit to get it out) and then slips over the hub (or bearing??) when you put the wheel back on.

Hope this makes sense to someone, thanks.

Hi

You could try Speedy wheels, or I saw a guy with Ghia and he used muffin tins, also Mk 1 Golfs have a nice plastic cap with the VW logo that might be made to fit.

Damn so these aren't a standard thing? :( I'd like all four the same so may have to look around in that case for a set of four but was really hoping these were quite common and that I could just pick up another easily.

Sorry, your wheels aren't standard! (they look nice though)

You could try a trailer accessories place, like carousel trailers toongabbie, caravan supplies, rocky point road, Kogarah. or some tyre joints that sell wheels as well may have them.

So what does everyone else have over the centre of their wheels if they have similar rims or rims like those MErcedes ones Fish had for sale (I think)?

KruizinKombi - July 19th, 2003 at 06:37 PM

Here's what I use:

No luck at Pick'N Payless this morning :( Did manage to find a set of back lights though in better condition than the ones I have :)

In fact, must of the wheels etc there had no centre caps at all.

Let me know if someone knows a place they might stock a few second hand (or new) centre caps.

Steve I will try Speedy wheels but suspect a new set from someone like them may be a bit pricey?

I have those wheels on mime. Sundowners or Wayfarers is their name? Anyway, I have 4 of those caps on mine also. Sorry, no spares, but I have seen these wheels on many kombi's here in Adelaide, so surely a vw wrecker would have some lying around? I too have gone out and bought the $20 for a set of 4 wheel covers like kruizin kombi. I reckon they look heaps nicer.

Listy - July 20th, 2003 at 08:32 PM

here's mine

KOM123 - July 20th, 2003 at 09:33 PM

Listy let me know if you come across any at the wreckers :)

I don't really want to put on covers because the current setup looks better if you see the whole colour scheme of the camper i.e. white looks better than silver

Getting the rims back next week too after being sandblasted and powdercoated so should look even better hopefully :)

Anyway, let me know if that spare pops up!

I know that you can get these from performance wheels as well. I don't know how much they are but I enquired about them at my local tyre place after all mine were stolen and they said it was no problem to order them in

baybuscamperkid - July 21st, 2003 at 05:08 PM

i have seen similar wheels, but polished, with plastic VW caps that i presume are off a Golf or similar. the plastic caps look way cooler and look stock

I've got no caps on my wheels either. When I purchased my last set of tyres I enquired about some caps, but the ones they had did not fit:(

david - July 22nd, 2003 at 09:57 AM

they could probably measure them and get you a nice new set of 4 for not much dollars , they look a lot like the wheels on my toyota commuter bus and they are a speedy wheel and they were from bob jane

The day of joy has arrived thankfully :)

Got the rims back and happy with how they shaped up. Ended up costing only $150.00 for four rims, that's to sandblast and powdercoat. Turnaround time was one week.

I got them done at:

Colour Coatings
36 Bessemer Street
Blacktown
powder@ihug.com.au

I dealt with a guy named Darren Tait who was excellent. He can be contacted on (02) 9831 6097.

Then it was a trip to:

Top Tyres
176 Sunnyholt Road
Blacktown

I was referred to them after calling Performance Wheels (thanks for the tip dakgrrl) and they stock quite a range of centre caps and mags from what I could see. Decided to get four new centre caps rather than chase up a 4th one to match the old ones and also got them to change over the nuts to chromies to finish the job off.

Overall very happy. Feel free to take a peek at Valla or elsewhere. I don't have a showcar so you'll have to decide on the quality but I'm happy with what's been done :)
