There is no easy way to mount modern alternators in stock generator position is...
bajachris88 - August 26th, 2010 at 11:53 PM

I'm in the market for upgrading to an alternator as things like dual batteries, sound systems and spot lights will all take their toll on the poor lil' stock generator.

I got like 4 spare good condition alternators from early 90's toyotas that are just sitting my garage collecting dust. Of course, with all the inbuilt regulators and all that jazz.

Is there any easy way at alll to adapt/mod the alternator or perhaps a readily available kit to buy that will allow me to fit an alternator at the stock position, but somehow have a continued output for the stock fan?

Or perhaps could I run the stock fan on a small but suitable electric thermofan motor of some kind with a simply frequency to voltage IC circuit i could make to increase and control the fan rpm with engine?

With limited space and the want for more amps cheaply, could this be very much possible? or am i living a dream that would require more effort than just buying a new alernator conversion kit?

I can weld up new alternator mounts at the generator position for a 'new age' style alternator, that doesn't worry me. I don't like the old holden alternator adapter kits that leave the generator running like a dead stick with the alternator poking out the side though.

anyways,
just me thinking aloud.
Chris.

Chris
stop thinking...lol

no..no..no...

You must use the stock fan with its very large output of air..
so You must use the fan belt to drive it..
with the correct ratio....

but

vw engined welders didn't have a generator...
just a shaft from the pulley to the fan.... and a normal fan belt

I have seen later model alternators sitting above the normal generator in shooting buggies..
some use a longer belt others use twin pulleys..
twin pulleys much better..
or an idler pulley;;?

cheers

Lee

Dude. I wouldn't bother.

I can sell you a second hand alternator that'll just need a rebuild for peanuts if you like?

I rebuilt the one that's currently on my car and it goes like a champ.

I've got a few lying around. Was thinking of doing one up for my 1500 some time in the future. Let me know if you wanty.

Dont under estimate stock bosch alternators. They're far better than these chinese crap ones on the market

Before my scooby went in the alternator on the lawnmower engine was the ORIGINAL 74 bosch one so its got over 400,000kms on it and you know how loaded up my electrical system is with 900w of audio, power windows, central locking, 110/90w headlights, too many guages etc and it wouldnt even dim the liights at idle with everything going

Aussie ingenuity showing through with how alot of 6volt bugs were converted in the 70s and 80s like above
pull the brushes from the stock 6 volt gen and mount some brackets to the base to hang a small alternator from a mainstreamer car below the oil filler though so the stock gen still has some decent belt contact.

I used to see heaps like that when 6volt bugs were still common as daily drivers, but you still see the occasional barn find on ebay setup like that

Yea i'm thinking too much lol.

Stock style alternator it is then! I'd need a new stand wouldn't i? i already have a bling bling after market one... it may suit. will see before purchasing a new.
Thanks guys for the run down, at least stock style should be lighter and less fault prone to my initial rants of insanity. Joel, urs is a prime example that it should handle my abuse lol. Nuffin can be any more gizmo orientated than yours haha. luv it!

Still working out where to stick the chode of a sc14 atm :)...

Well when you finish working that out, then you can start on where to put one on an EJ for me

I gave up trying to find room, some guy on thesamba is trying to fit an SC14 on an EJ25, but judging by the lack of any updates i can imagine the direction it probably took
