Looking at building a Roof Rack for my beetle, wondering if anyone has had any experience in this? Or know measurements or a website to assist

did you know they are readily available new, in australia?

Mpost of the dimensions can be readily measured, e.g. the length of the wooden slats. The only dimension which is a bit interesting is the width of the top tray, which you can get very accurate with a cardboard mockup. The frame would be powder coated and the slats should be painted with marine varnish.

For someone with welding skills and access to a metal band-saw, it's not an especially difficult project. If you build one like the reference photo, take lots of measurements and post the plans here as a public service.

Alternatively, think outside the box and make one entirely from polished wood....or carbon fibre...

I know they are available new... Im more interested in making one as a project with my Grandfather who was a welder and i would do the timber work. Plus i have pipe bending equipment at home, easy way to save a few dollars, learn some new skills and spend time with my pop
Just thought someone might have previously tried it so i could get a few rough measurements of them.

If i do it, i will happily post reference photos and measurements

Bump... so nobody has?

Could somebody that owns a roof rack use the attached diagram to give me sum measurements? mainly the uprights and the length, just to get an idea of how high it sits above the roof. And the width would also be good to work out the angle it slants inwards

thanks

I built a Type 3 Rack from a how to on the internet, Measurements were not all right but turned out fine in the end. Mind you my Type 3 is ratty so it fits in fine.

I can't seem to find any useful measurements, I have found alot of good pictures though which would help greatly with the angles, but someone that owns a bought roof rack to give me measurements would be fantastic in helping me draw up plans and decide how im going to attack this

MOST of the ones I have seen are old and on rat beetles

doesn't really need to be any real measurements apart from fitting the roof...

back in the 50s and 60s they were common on lots of cars...

probably some fitted many vehicles...

rubber suction pads and attached to the drip rails like vw roof racks...

easier to do...

make a luggage rack that sits over the engine cover...

attached to the vents and bumper

I like those

Yea but im not planning on having a rear bumper so thats out
I just like that retro look that the rack gives, im planning on painting my car similar to the one below, it also has the same roof rack, nice two tone retro concept for me

7 Measurements

dubai - October 13th, 2010 at 10:41 PM

So incase you cannot read my shitty writing starting from the left up right the measurements are 25cm 26cm center 25cm front the other supports on 45 degree angles from left to right are 29cm 25cm 25cm 29cm
the overal lenght is approx 90 cm and the width is 100cm also incled the clamp it screws tight on both sides keeping it in place. i used security bits to slow down people from stealing it cause if you really wanted it you would use a hack saw so hopefully its a deterent if anything.

oh nd the little curved pieces on the fron the gap is about 10cm.

Hope this helps

Although I am still keen to make one by hand, Ive been too busy and apparently they are on special at Classic Vee Dub, so my Parents are gonna get me one for my birthday

Question - Bloke at CVD claims they dont make / have them for super bugs..... I may be wrong, but i thought that they fit all years throught to '76 as the roof shape didnt change on a standard / Super.

Do they ?

annosL - January 31st, 2011 at 11:35 PM

I don't think the roof line is different, I have one rack that I interchange on a '60 and a '73 L, fits fine
