Hi guys,
I've got a 74 beetle with 1600 motor. The problem is i can hear a howling sound whenever i accelerate (in gear & neutral). The 'woooo' sound
seems like it coming frm the left side of the engine & comes in only when i accelerate. I've checked the fan, there's nothing stuck in there
& also changed faulty alternator bearings. Have brought the engine down twice now but it's still there.
Pls help as it's very annoying. Any clues??
Thanks.
Very difficult to faultfind a problem like this, from your description...fan, but you've been there. I suggest a quick bit of video at the engine with a rev so we all can get a better idea of the noise. You'll get a stack more replies with more info or vid.
so if u run momentarily without the generator/fan belt, you don't get that noise? or you still do?
Hi,
Noise is still there with or without the belts. It's louder from inside the bug. Started after i repaired a leak in the external oil cooler hose (oil
cooler is mounted inside the rear guard). There's also a small 10" fan for cooling mounted above the oil cooler. And i also did some adjustments on
the rear brakes.
The noise becomes louder as i accelerate harder. Will try to check again this evening.
Rgds.
Pulley tin rubbing on pulley ???
Thx Matt, just got back frm the w/shop. Syncro the twin baby Weber's (just fitted last week) but couldn't get it right as the timing is very erratic
(not consistent). The guy says that it's got something to do with the electronic distributor, faulty & the accelerator cable getting stuck
somewhere. Well this is another story.
Going in again this coming Saturday morning to check the noise (even he's not sure what it is) & reply some parts.
Rgds.
YIKES
that is a hard one...
sounds like it makes the noise when the car is moving or not moving
must be the engine???
or fan under the guard hitting something????
LEE
howls are mainly belt or even some times a leak i had a not so much a howl but a strange noise turned out to be a pin hole in the exhaust
