Charge light
Rustbucket68 - July 21st, 2003 at 08:28 PM

We are having some unusual electrical problems with Shani's bug. The charge light sometimes flickers during normal driving (40-70 mph) as well as that when the lights are on they sometimes become very bright for a short period then go back to normal. When they go bright the volt meter maxes out and then everything goes back to normal. There is also a large amount of interfernce through the radio. Anyone with any idea's?:(

Does it have a generator or alternator??

My guess is it is the regulator over charging/supplying big time every now and then.

How often is this happening??

Blue it has a generator and mainly happens when the lights are on. would the voltage regulator have anything to do with the problem?

I'm guessing that its either the regulator or one of the wires to it. :)

Dont think so Col

If it was one of the wires it would go off, not real bright.

The more i think about it, regulator and/or generator. It HAS to be SOMETHING associated with the maving of the elevel of the volts, not in the delivery.

Could be a good time to swap to an alternator?

Remove the regulator cover & you'll see 2 sets of points like in your dizzy. Give them a going over with a points file if the contacts look crappy. Otherwise go see a Sparky. They have equipment to check charge rates etc & should look & test for maybe a nominal amt of $$. Otherwise if you act without knowing whats happening, you could be replacing something that is OK.

I replaced the battery in the Oval with a large capacity unit (12v) a couple of weeks ago. I have noticed that the charge light glows really dimly at a certain rev range. About 1000rpm. Didnt do it with the old stuffed battery. I have assumed that it was to do with the voltage levels in the new battery being higher at low revs than the generator output???
Generator and reg are both only 12 months old.
