Whats everybodies thoughts on powder coating of tinware and fanhousings vs spray painting. Is the cost worth the finish. Is it more durable. Is one
more affected by heat more than the other ?
My type 1 motor is painted.
My Type 4 motor is powder coated
POWDER COATED LOOKS GREAT!:bounce:bounce
Was all a mater of time. I was rushing they Type 1 motor a bit - the kombi was a longer term project. I have had the kombi on the road since late
November and say 8,000kms and i still looks great!
Has not even been degreased!
My only experience with powder coating was a pair of roof bars. The result was crap. Sure they looked good, but the stuff peeled off too easily and
was soft like that plastic coating they use on clothes horses and shower caddys.
I figure it's just like anything, there are some places that are good at it, and some that aren't.
Well so far i am sold on the stuff.
Daisy the Kombi has her Cookie Cutters and engine tin powder coated.
I want to get some spare Type 1 tin so i can get it done too :bounce
As i said, probabally 8,000kms and no peeling or even any chips on the wheels!
I just want some type 1 tinware twin port
powdercoating, if done well is brilliant, just watch the chipping if u drop things on it or bump it into sharp things.
I powder coated all my T1 tinware and I'm sold on it, it has been very durable...the fan front plate rattled around in the boot of the Audi for about a month and came out looking like just coated! Cheap too I, I did it all in satin black and for $100 bucks I think. If I wanted different colours it might have been more? (I had already sand blasted them at work) Preperation is everything.
Or you could get it CERAMIC COATED,(ducks for cover).
there's an article in this months VW Trends about diy ceramic coating havn't got my copy yet but it will be interesting reading i'm
sure
$100.00 isn't cheap.
If you have allready blasted the tin it shouldn't cost you more than about $60.00 to powder coat all of it, including rocker covers , any colour.
I degreased and epoxy enamel spray can painted the tinware fro Helbus, and it is fairly good.
I got powder coating done on some suspension parts on the EH and it does look good. Not quite as glossy as two pak, but more durable.
