The Best 12V Ignition Coil????
DylanTheDubber - November 19th, 2010 at 05:58 PM

Hey Guys,

Woundering what coil to buy. Some options are

- Boch GT40 (Red)
- Bosch Blue Coil
- Flame Thrower
- MSD Blaster

Wondering what would go the best on our 1600cc TP
I Know a standard SU12 Coil would be fine but we want a sports/ performance one so what one should i buy?

YES the SU12 is OK...
the blue coil and the GT40 are both [I believe]are low resistance coils which cannot be used with some electronic or high energy ignition systems..[under 2 ohms]
but OK when using points and condensor ignition...

I was using a High Energy ignition [DSE kit] with points and a high resistance coil [above 2 ohms] 3 ohms and the engine started with every first kick of the starter motor..
every time... I also think the engine went better too...

I think the MSD and other systems are OK but I find them way too expensive ... IMHO..

the high energy ignitions usually put approx 20 to 30 volts into the coil... so that is why the low resistance ones burn out

My High energy kit burnt out when My points wore down and shorted out....
I do have a pertronix to put into My new Bosch SVDA distributor... Single Vacuum Dual advance -
vacuum and mechanical advance....
Now that IS A GREAT IMPROVEMENT...

My engine is so smooth now accelerating...
instead of waiting for the 009 to get into action...
the vacuum brings the SVDA dizzy into action as soon as You touch the accelerator... unreal...

I hope that answered some of Your Questions??
or maybe made You think of More... lol

cheers

On a stock engine with points and standard leads you wont notice any difference using one of these so called performance coils over a stock one

GT40 were decent coils 10-15 years ago but the quality of the current ones is pretty ordinary, probably outsourced to china like most things

I've had 2 die on me, one after only 6 months and know of other people its happened to as well
ALot of people make the mistake of chucking a GT40R on without a ballast resistor too which never ends well.

the older GT-T(R) coils are good plus any generic E series ford coils are great too, an upgrade over the old stock vw coils.

the GT and GT-T(R) are both 40KV and the standard ford, nissan etc... coils are about 30KV
I think the standard vw coils are 25KV which are all pointless unless you are running high CR (9:1 +) or forced induction or MSD/fast ignition modules requiring fast pulse response.

thanks everyone - Getting a Bosch Blue Coil and running flame thrower petronix electronic igition kit.

I like Lee's performance yellow coil

Carter - November 19th, 2010 at 11:30 PM

why don't you get a pertronix coil then.. 40k volts.

find out what resistance the blue coil is...
as the GT40 coil is NOT to be used with the Pertronix ignition kit.. not sure on igniter 11..

My yellow Coil is a BOSCH 3 ohm unit..

The Pertronix flame thrower coils are available in 1.5 and 3 ohms...

My pertronix Igniter 1847V says : for 4 cylinder engines a minimum of 3 ohms is required for the coil..

cheers

PS: I also have Gold, black and blue colored coils.... lol
and a spare yellow one.... lol

Yes
But they would have some spark..... lol

until the coil cooked....

Yeah we are going to put the full petronix kit in it inc. the flame thrower coil. Blue Coil for now.
