Silly question, are beetle and type 3 auto gearboxes interchangeable? Freind off mine has a beetle and the box is shot, but he has an opertunity to get a good type 3 box any body got an idea.

depends

Simple answer - no, gear box is too wide. Type 3's dont have horns

Expensive answer - any thing is possible

I have actually seen it done
Oval Glenn, use to be on here years ago, his brother had it done.
Think it was rally only though and not street registered

Nope.

The Type 3 is a full automatic gearbox.
Whereas the Beetle (I assume you're talking about a semi-auto) is essentially a 3 speed manual transaxle with a torque converter AND a clutch. They are not interchangeable.

The Type 3 unit has a much wider oil pan and so the frame horns are further apart on the vehicle. Hence it won't fit between the horns of the Beetle.

I have seen a buggy with a full auto trans in it, done at CVD some time ago I believe. But it's a lot of fab work to the rear end to make it fit.

Hope this helps.
