I work with a guy from the Philippines and he has cut the roof off his beetle and is now driving it around with out any extra reinforcing,
he was telling me that the dash moves all over the place when he is driving it,
has any body got the a link to the engineered requirements to reinforce the chassis or a copy of the drawings.
thanks
I don't know of a site with drawings but he definitely needs the reinforcing rails that run underneath both heater channels. There is also a thick
brace runs across the car from side to side. The front edge of the rear seat bottom sits on that brace. There are fillets welded in to the door
openings to brace where the A pillar and B pillar meet the heater channel inside the door area. On top of that, there is a bracket under the bonnet
that goes from the inner guard across to the dash area for extra support.
This is not to mention that the windscreen frame is a different shape with a bit of reinforcing in it and the rear quarter panel inner pieces are a
bit beefier and have an area for the wind up rear windows to go in to. This makes the rear seat narrower as well. There are mounts for the roof
mechanism in the rear quarter inner panels and different treatment around the top of where he would have cut the roof off above the engine vents.
This is for a late cabrio and may be slightly different for an early one and there may be other things I can't remember but they are the main
ones.
