What size is the 12 point multi spline tool that is used to remove the outer CV's from the Stub axle on a 71 super beetle.
Some people have told me 8mm and others 10.....
Any confirmation
Cheers
Jeremy
I am pretty sure a 6mm allen key fits in there, so just find whatever spline size is the same as a 6mm allen key.
I remember when I bought my spline tool the sizing scale was really weird.
Hi Jeremy
I just checked the one I used to take the drive shafts of my T3 and it a 8mm spine drive. Hope this helps

It is an 8mm Multi Spline Tool NOT A TORQ bit . It is multispline.
Jeza
just borrowed the tool.
yes - 8mm
a 6mm allen key will fit but they can slip. Much better to get the propper tool.
Can anyone tell me why Mr VW put a 6mm allen key one side and the 12 point multi spline head the other side.
Really cant fathom that one :jesus
Yes, defintely use the multispline.
Blue, I have multisplines both sides, maybe you don't have the orginal bolts (but then neither do I)
When I bought my Kombi it had both style's of bolt heads, I found out the hard way about using a six mill allan key in the splined bolts, it
chews out the splines very easy.
Rob.......
VW used 6mm allen key head bolts on type 1 to start out with at least. The replacement units are multispline.
As for tools they are worth $3.95 retail each and fit into a 10mm socket or spanner. They are readily availible.
If anyone has trouble getting them then I can probably have them on your doorstep for under $5 when I get back to OZ. If I buy enough they will
probably only cost $2.50 each. I usually buy a box of 10 at a time as I tend to loose them.
WOW.... i was just quoted $19.95 + GST
I wonder if we are talking the same thing??
Borrowed one anyway - but i an interested in buying one Brad for next time
8mm Multi spline tool may be readily available were you are Brad, but I checked out half a dozen of the motoring/ engineering/ tool shops around Welly
and didn't come up with anything!!!
A lot of the guys said WTF. Others said try the local VW garage. Or we can get one for you, by mid next week... oh hang on, no the Rep say's
theres none in the country.....
So I've borrowed one for the weekend, and then I'll put my order in next week, and wait.
Only had to use the vice grips on one nut too, due to a previous butcher.
Next stumbling block is a 17mm allen key which I also couldn't get ex stock any where in town.... another order next week.
Talk about hold ups.....
Cheers
Jeremy
you can make your own 17 mm allan key by welding a 17 mm bolt to a piece of steel I used a piece of 20 mm rhs
this is what I use to get my oil plugs out of the gbox
marcel
Yes, thanks Marcel.... I'll have to make that special VW tool for Myself.... I think I used a bolt with a couple of locknuts
on it before.... anyway one is still leaking slightly.... and I thought I knew eerrr Most things... but You can learn something everyday.... thanks
again Marcel....

Yeah a bolt with a couple of nuts works well for the gearbox, but the head fell off mine when I tried to use it on the rear trailing arms. This Bolt
is just a wee bit tighter than the gearbox filler plug
