Fuel Gauge wiring.. confused :(
Gangel - December 12th, 2010 at 01:22 PM

Hi Ppplz

Sorry for the short note, but im working on the bug today and i've rewired everything however I have mislabbeled 2 cables!!!!

1. Brown wire (no white stripe) coming from the indicator on the steering wheel

- Where does it go to!!

2. The male terminal on the back of the fuel gauge ... where does the wire on that go to??

-I thought it went to the fuel tank male terminal but when i do that it doesnt seem to work!!

Its a '66 beetle and ive looked at my wiring diagrams but i cant see them!!

SOrry for the dumb questions, im new at all this and trying hard!!

That's cos you're looking at the wrong diagram, you want 68 and later 12 volt.
Check what model your bug is cos it will be after 68
brown wire is the horn, and the male terminal on the back of the fuel gauge marked G goes to the sender in the tank.

If it doesn;t do anything you got a problem with soemthing.
Is there power to the stabilisor?

ok well it USED to work (4 weeks ago when i took the wiring out)

- i attached G to the male terminal on top of the tank however still no go... What I was wondering is this is where the signal for the guage is come from so where is the power and the earth for the gauge?

My Lights in the speedo (that come on with headlights) also seem not to be on so is it possible that the power is not going to my speedo at all?

:(

Cheers for the help so far... In the end i know the parts are working I just seem to have stuffed the wiring a bit!!

G goes to the sender, make sure the power is going to the stabilisor.
This is the metal box screwed the back of the fuel gauge, there should be 12volts at the wire connected to it.

Also a common problem with standard bugs is the sender in tank doesnt earth well.
what I usually do is run a wire from one of the 5 mounting screws across to the body somewhere

With the speedo lights, make sure the dimmer is turned right up

ok still confused so tm im going to take a photo of it all and label it on photoshop!!!

-at the moment if i use one of those light things that lights up when u touch the tip to something that has power:
the back of the dash lights light the thing up.. however the lights dont come on (even when dimmer up)

isnt G the stabilisor?? (the box on the back)
If so how can it go to sender AND the stabiliser

Im thinking I have to put power to the back of the little box (which I ahvent tried yet) then the fuel tank goes to another terminal.. i just cant find which one but ill have a look.

I have earthed one cable to one of the bolts going into the fuel talk at the top :)

Just found this:

Wiring diagram

Am going to print out and use it tm to see if i get anywhere!!
:)

Looks promising as I have a few things incorrect at the moment.

ok so i got the wiring digaram to help out, and i have the fuel gauge working (i didnt see the male K terminal sitting facing away from me!!) so added power to that and its all working again

However!! the lights in the speedo are not switching on when i turn headlights on

The cable is running from K5 (the lights) to the correct headlight switch terminal and the acutal male termainals gain Power when i switch the lights on (an in the the little screwdriver with a light turns on when i earth it to the car...

In the diagram it says the lights are earthed... are they earthed to the speedo? My speed is earthed + i did a temporary earth from a screw with nothing on it in the back of the speedo and no luck,,,

Running out of ideas so would be great to have some input on what im missing...?? Maybe even just burst globes?

Did the dash lights work before?
They often have a prblem in the switch with the dimmer circuit burning out. Do you have power at the back of the bulb? With the speedo earthed if the bulb is ok and there's power to it, it should work.

yeh i know.. bit wierd.

Just bought new bulbs and im going to do a proper earth.. see if it gets results!
