I'll fitting exhaust- side winder
aintgotitmusthaveit - December 15th, 2010 at 08:04 PM

Hi guys I purchased a sidewinder exhaust.
Problem its the slip on type for the j tubes.
Problem is the flaired female is about 3mm bigger than the male!
Am I meant to assemble this with exhaust cement to take up the gap or have I been sold a faulty product?

3mm? thats alot i know they expand with heat once running but i dunno about 3mm.... maybe just chuck it on there and fire it up and see what happens. Can't do any damage.

maybe cut a piece of flat 1 ml steel, fold it round and shove it in the join as well and then clamp the lot together, a bit of exhaust cement wont hurt but if the gap is too big the cement will prob blow out.

Hi

Are they the real sidewinders or a copy set. The ones I fitted to my sons car were an extremely tight fit, they are genuine A1s.

The 'copy' set I bought from Classic VW was tight and exactly the same as my A1 set. :tu:

Is it just larger at the end or all the way up the pipe ?

Guys I bought an exhaust off westi and it was a nice tight fit.
This thing is quite loose. Looks to me to have been over flared. Iagree that as the flair ends the tubes can engage but I have not fitted them to the block to see where they sit. I'll try it out this weekend and post some picks.

Have you been given a wrong set of J tubes??

I know you can get different exhausts - 1 1/2" 1 5/8" etc etc

Is it a 15/8" exhaust with 1 1/2" J pipes??

Ok I trial fit it today
Lost of clearance but thankfully the pipe buried itself about 1.25" resulting in it sealing where the pipe flairs back
Lots of ground clearance too
Thanks guys
