Car back on road.. now misfiring!! help plz!!
Gangel - December 17th, 2010 at 03:00 AM

Hi pplz,

I took my car off the road for 4 months to re-upholster, respray and fit new seatbelts

Got it onto road yesterday and its mis-firing

if i plant my foot down its ok, but unless i have high revs when taking the clutch off it starts to splutter and struggle as if its going to stall.

My dads good at this thing usually and he suggested either the points or the spark plugs so i replaced the sparks and cleaned the distributer but its all still same.

Going to VW place tm to get some new points but is there anything else I should be looking at??

your fuel maybe stale? I had my engine sitting on the floor of the shed for about 6 months without use when i was re-building my baja. once finished i drove it and it ran like a pig, similar symptoms to yours, i put a fresh tank of 98 octane premium in and i couldn't believe the difference.... give that a shot.

my guess is a blocked idle jet??

What carb set up are you running??

hmm carb setting... no idea lol... however the mechanic did it.. 2 yrs ago!

I bought new points anyway to put in it which ill do today.

Put a tank of 98 octane when i got it back on the road.

It was spluttering day 1,
put 1/4 tank octane end of day 1 (it was 3/4 full already)

Ran well (but not perfect) day 2

Day 3 and 4: Fail.. running very badly, coughing and spluttering in low revs on all gears, not efficient at high revs but doesnt splutter!

i think he means is it stock carb, dual, kads, webbers etc.... where abouts are you?

its a carby problem and a good off the motor clean, not a hard or dificult job very easy for someone that has never done it or saw it done ,all thejets need tobe remoed again easy they only go back to where they came from they wont fit anywhere else, with all jets removed use a compressor to blow all the caby gallereies that where the major problems come from ,and if you have a carby kit even better
good luck

Ok so heres where im at:

-replaced points
-replaced rotor arm in dist.
-reaplced sparks
-removed carby and cleaned with carby cleaner. Sprayed out all dust and grit etc

-tighted the + nut on the generator and it SNAPPED SO NOW ITS BUGGERED

-before i snapped the gen terminal, it was still misfiring as badly as before even after the carby clean and checking timing and all points and spark gaps.

Am now at the stage that Im going to need a new generator so i can have a + terminal again!!

Any ideas on the misfiring still welcome. THe rubber ends to the vacuum advance tube were both massive split as i just found out, therefore im going to replace them incase they are part of the problem. Cant test that theory yet as the generator is out as well as the inlet manifold and the carby!!!

Getting new GEN tomorrow so ill check on here later.

Least it gives me a cahance to replace the gaskets to all the bits ive taken out!!

Greedy53: Ill have anmother go with the carby and the cleaning and see if i can get a compressor to have a better go but after all that i did it didnt make a difference at all!!

Glenn

ps. Thanks for the input everyone, i appreciate the help!

o and the carb is stock, Solex 30.

Apparently my Distributer is the wrong one for my car (as our mechanic said today!) he said mine is for a 1200.

Does anyone know where to find one i should be using/is there an aftermarket/custom one that is worth putting on instead?

Regards,
Glenn

LOL so:

- ffound old generator and took its terminals off and soldered them onto my generator: All working sweet again.

Checked points again and spacings and my Dad says "your doing it wrong, that gauge is imperial"

At which stage I looked and no, its metric.

LOL he set all the sparks to 0.6" or something rather than 0.6mm

Redid all sparks and its running really well.!!!

In the end it took over 10 hrs of screwing around over 2 days but i least i learnt alot!!

Thanks all for all the help :)
