I've got a '67 Aussie built Beetle. It's still running its original 1300 engine - which I must say is getting v-e-r-y tired.

I'm thinking of pulling the 'ol 1300 and replacing it with something a bit bigger - perhaps a 1776cc or 1915cc?

I will recondition the 1300, and store it away.

Any advice or thoughts on a reliable, yet punchy engine choice would be appreciated. (Let the games begin )

I'll go for a wander through the site and see what others have said. I imagine it's a rather emotive and subjective subject - we all have our own opinions of what's good and what's not so good .
I'll consider all the comments then see what my wallet says. After all, it seems to rule the roost most of the time .

It really depends on how much you want to spend and how fast you want to go. Don't dismiss the stock 1600cc twin-port. They're perfectly adequate for a street car, and coming from a tired 1300 to a reconditioned 1600cc twin-port you might be pleasantly surprised at how nice they are to drive. Not as fast as a big-bore engine, but they are nippy and willing to accelerate briskly. Mine pulls smoothly from quite low revs (30km/h in third gear) and goes up big hills in fourth gear at the speed limit quite happily. Best of all they are cheap, economical and reliable.

Are you planning on doing it yourself ??? If not, then pick your builder first and listen to their ideas based on what your planned usage, budget etc.

Personal experience - the previous incarnation of my 1915 was by Stan Pobjoy (down near Coffs Harbor), and last year had it rebuilt and upgraded by Dave Butler. I'd happily recommend either of them... DB's a top bloke and is very active on the forum (his login is 'dangerous'), while with Stan you'd have to phone when you have an hour or so to spare. Round Brissie I know several other guys who've had good results with Leon's Motors and Matt Berry (who's on the forum also).
