Spring plate differences
Peter O - December 22nd, 2010 at 09:34 PM

A question for the bus and beetle gurus

What are the differences in spring plates between Bus IRS and Beetle IRS apart from the bolt pattern and length?

Are the torsion bars the same diameter and do the have the same spline?

Is it possible to shorten bus plates and re-drill to fit beetle style trailing arms? ( obviously have to change pivot boxes)
Cheers

Hey Peter

The splines are different both in the arms and in the torsion bar housing. Thicknesses are different.
Lot of fuss to change.

Hmmm
Might be easier to cut and redrill the Bus plates by the sound of that.
Thanks for the reply Marcus
Can anyone tell me the length of a IRS beetle spring plate from the center of the torsion to the center of the front trailing arm bolt hole

Sure you can
I want to mount some 3X3 trailing arms I have to a Bus torsion tube under a Sand rail and they are ment for beetle IRS not Bus. I intend to use the bus CV's and have a set of longer Axles to suit. Its either use the spring plates or just install some pivot plates and go coil over fox shocks.
I just like making things jump and go hard in the bush
