Kombi Ignition

Hi People
I was thinking of getting one of those points replacement thingo's and getting a new coil, relegating the old OEM one to the spares box.
What are those GT40 Resin coils like, are they any better than the oil filled GT40, and wich one (model No) would I have to get for a T4 2ltr Kombi
Any advice what point replacement manufacturer is the best!

G'day Rob

New to this forum.

Anyway, i have a '73 kombi 1.8L and I had the points replaced with a magfire. I have also changed the original coil with a GT 40 (not sure what type). I have had no problems, and in fact have found the pointless dizzy to perform much better than the points.

Hey Rob,
the gt 40 and the gt 40R coils differ in the fact that one is to be used with a ballast resistor and the other on a system without, however I cant actually remember which is which, but any where you can buy one will have that info.
But from what you wrote I guess there may just be a new version of a GT40 of which you speak.
It was posted on here recently that a 2.6 litre carby equipped Mitsubishi Magna electronic ignition distributor lends itself nicely to a comparatively easy mod to fit into VWs so you can just set it and forget it.

This is the thread of which I speak.

I waiting for mine to annoy me enough to bother getting my hands dirty but so far I'm too busy waving.

Cheers Tony

Robo

I have a Magfire in both my 1776 beetle and my wife's 2.0L T2.5 kombi.

The coil wants to be a high impedence/resistance one. At least 3.5 ohms. Some are only 1ohm and they will blow the electronics on start up.

I like the normal $30 Bosch coil - the black one (SU 12 - i think)
I believe the Bosch Blue coil is for points and the Black coil is more suited to electronics.
You can use the black coil on points though.

Thanks Blue
My ignition system is running fine at the moment, but when you have so many knowlageable people to ask on the forum, why not find out all you can about the options you have.
