I'm converting my '67 beetle to 12V, and when I've mounted the fan on the genny shaft there is a rub between the back of the fan and the backing
plate.
The fan is mounted onto the hub with no washers/spacers at back. At the front there is a washer and lock nut. The 'washer' is a special with the
cut-out to suit the drive shaft.
My question is, should there be spacers between the hub and the shaft to shift the fan axially out along the shaft and thus clear the backing plate.
My feeling is it's more likely my backing plate is a little warped but just wanted to check before I start any panelbeating on it - I've only got
one!
Thanks, Angus
Are all the shims missing?
There should be half a dozen or so, same as the pulley has, the unused ones go on the front side under the nut.
Needs to be spaced out so it sits in the center of both the shroud and the backing plate.

Thanks for that. There were no shims at all. When I pulled apart another genny/fan I had this morning it had a single shim, but it is still not
enough.
Now knowing there should be half a dozen or so makes it simple.
I'll dig around to see if I have any lying around. I didn't even know I had this other genny and fan, it's amazing how VW crap seems to
accumulate....
