Hello people,
Can anyone tell me if 1964 Beetle came as standard with just a drivers door/wing mirror or one on both sides. I have the interior one but as this will
be the first time it's been on the road in twenty years and has no mirrors at present I need to know what it came with as standard so it meet the ADR
of the day.
Cheers,
mike
is there big holes in door to sreww in a mirror
No, Australian Deluxe Beetles did not come standard with ANY exterior mirrors. They were only available as dealer accessories. You needed to buy the
mirror/arm assembly, PLUS a replacement hinge pin. These had a threaded top for the mirror to screw into, which the standard hinge pins don't
have.
There were no ADRs in 1964, and a 1964 car is not even required to have seat belts, let alone exterior mirrors. Rules like those didn't come in in
Australia until 1971. But by all means fit them if you wish.
Cool. Well I best get that in writing form a VW dealer cos the safety cert guy might not like it.
And I do wanna get them but just so I can get it roadworthied and to it's new resting place I just needed to know that fact.
Cheers,
mike
A (modern) VW dealer probably won't be able to help you as they weren't around in the air-cooled era. Most current VW dealers have come on since
2001 and won't know anything about 1964 VWs.
Contact Mick Motors - they sell Beetle mirrors/hinge pins. It's a tricky job to get the current pins out without damaging the paint or denting the
door/body - be careful. But really, you don't need to worry about them - you're registering a pre-ADR car.
