Webers Vs Kadrons
Oasis - July 29th, 2003 at 12:12 AM

Apart from webers being a bit more adjustable, will they make me go faster or smoother?? If so IDAs of IDFs? And it's two of them on a 1916. Any opinions would be much appreciated, and if there's already a post about this let me know,
Bill

Bill

read the above link

In a simple term

Kads are single barrel duals
DRLA Delorto and IDF Webers are dual barrel duals
IDA Webers are dual barrel dual race carbs

As a dual barrel duals are a barrel per pot you can tune better. They flow more air.
It is "easier" to change vents in a Weber carb.
You can get more sizes in IDF's 36,40,44 and 48's with vents from 28 to 44?

That being said check out AJ Sims site

http://www.lowbugget.com/

AJ sells kits to take Kads to 46mm and rums a 12.57 1/4mile in 1916 Kad fed beetle. Now wether it is a street car is another thing

Personally i like IDF's

I am sure there was a thread about this (I started it) but can't find it. Try seaching the old Forum http://pub83.ezboard.com/baussieveedubbers
From what I got told, Webers will give you more power but will need to be tuned more often than Kadrons. They are much more expensive too. IDFs seem to be the ones to go for. I recall the feedback was generally Kadrons are more suitable for daily drivers for up to 1916. More competative driving (or larger CCs) Webers are better. Talk to Rod Penrose, he seem to know a lot about Kadrons and used them a lot. Also matttyler (on this forum) has a 1916 with a pair of Kadrons. I believe he is very happy with it. He can tell you his personal opinion. Personally, I prefer the Kadrons because they are smooth on a daily driver and easier to tune than Webers. But that's only my personal opinion not an expert one
Good luck
Raf

Ahh, one more thing. VolksWorld mag had a carby comparison article couple of month ago. They compared most dual carbies available on the market. If you want, I can dig the articel out, scan it & email it to you

You will get all sorts of varying opinions on this one.

I've got Kads on a Pobjoy 1916 'Stage I'. They are great. But I think it all depends on the 'total package'.

No point putting big carbies on a small engine or an engine with small ports. The fuel/air pump (engine) won't create enough suction to work the carbies properly.

So in my case the next step will be bigger heads before bigger carbies.

Talk to people in the industry with plenty of experience and you'll be set straight.

Yep that's right 56astro. No use having big jugs if you're engine can't use them. I, too have Kads on a base 1916 and they're great. So, webers are more 'tunable' but who gives a toss. You should only need to tune once...

True-ish but a set of Webers IS a better quality bit of metal.
Webers are only set up once.
They breath better and more.
The kad linkage is not well made.

Many people are happy with kads but they are not better than Webers ....

Thanks All. Big help. It is my daily driver, and as I'm not all that mechanically minded maybe I should stick with the Kads for driveability. It does go great anyway except for the overrun.
karmannghia60, I'd love a copy of that article if it's not too much trouble.

email address is below.

Oasis - July 29th, 2003 at 01:24 PM

Cool. I will. I'm in Barnstaple Rd. I sometimes see an orange bug (with whitewalls I think) in that street opposite Vintage cellars. Is that one of these guys? Also sometimes a red bug with the decklid up on the main road, also a yellow super? with Aero guards. Looks a bit like Steve Carter's but isn't. My car's at V Force at the moment getting fixed. Dougnut shop sounds good. Let me know when etc.. Bill

Yeah, but one of the arguments webberheads have for Webers (in general - not just here on VW forum) is that they are 'more tunable' to which I say - so what...?
Yeah, the Kadron linkage in ordinary, ay. But they're a good, cut-price usable carb that work well on a 1916 etc

Oasis - July 29th, 2003 at 06:02 PM

Thanks Raf. No hurry, whenever you got time is cool

Yeah Blue, that is my car... I should have it back from Richard on thursday. Here it is:

Bizarre - July 29th, 2003 at 06:26 PM

Cool - so what is powering it at the moment??

Oasis - July 29th, 2003 at 11:47 PM

The guy I bought it from said that the old engine That was in it was a beast to drive around town (fast but not practical), so he put a 1916 (94s) with kads in it. I've done nothing to it and take no credit for the work done on it. I saw it 8 or 9 years ago when I was a poor young bloke and wanted to buy it then, and it was for sale back then. Nick Blunck used to own it. Thought about it on and off for years. I saw it this year at the Nationals for sale! It had ACT plates on it. I bought it with a credit card, seriously. Perfect for me as I'm not very mechanically minded, and couldn't do this to a car if I tried... and wouldn't even know where to start if I did.

bug eyed - July 30th, 2003 at 12:35 PM

think i saw it at the nationals guy wanted 13K for it i think. was sound car, central locking nice narrowed beams

do you mind saying how much??
