Type 3 IRS to type 1

Is it possible to fit a type 3 IRS rear to a type 1?
I will weld in the IRS brackets just want to know it the spring plates etc will fit ok and if the gear box will line up and fit.

Yea, it's all the same layout, my black 70 bug had a Squareback rear end with the bigger torsion bars in it.

Just means you get stuck with those bastard double spring plates

Make sure you line up all your geometry and you're sweet. Their heaver Tbars can have advantages too. I think some of the nose cones on the IRS boxes can be different??

Joel, what is so bad about the double bars?

73 onwards the nose cones swapped, but they can be easily changed.

There's no strength gain from the double spring plates, its just dead weight and just makes for extra work when setting ride height, they can be a real PITA to get back together.

Plenty of other stuff will break before the spring plates do.
