How to paint disc rotors - Nicely
Aussie Dubbin - March 17th, 2011 at 12:29 PM

Hi Guys as the title suggests, how do you go about painting unused rotors? You do you get most of it but not the area that the pad hits??? The rotors are cross drilled, it will probably be black or silver, but just to neaten it up and stop that rused look.

Cheers

Can you just paint the whole thing and then just let the pads do the work? Or will this foul the Pads?

just tape the working surface up

You would probably be fine to just keep paint on the friction surface to a minimum but that said I taped mine up too, not that much work to do.

I have seen some cross drilled with paint in the holes too???

heres a tip that will sound CRAZY at first but works very welll with a little practice, brush the gripping surface with grease, paint the whole lot, then wipe off the excess grease, the rotors are now also protected against rust so they should stay in good condition while your project hits the road, or if you need to use the rotors straight away, a quick spray with disc cleaner / brake cleaner will remove all of the grease and not harm the paint, the first time you use the brakes will clean the discs up as well!

Hi

Don't use heatproof paint. I use White Knight epoxy enamel in Silver.

I always just paint the rotors... never tape anything up

the pads soon take it off....

PS: I've never raced so My rotors never get too hot...
never had any paint blister etc... usually use VHT paint...
but its not shiny... Epoxy paint is nice looking...

My Brakes have had a decent work out, front discs are down to 7.9mm  and the Gloss black bunnings polykote i put about 5 years ago still looks as good as when it went on.

They get hot but not that hot.

I just leave mine au natural. If you've got any kind of old-school wheel (I run steel rims with hubcaps) then you can't see the rotors anyway!
