"flopping" a ring and pinion?
type82e - July 30th, 2003 at 09:14 PM

Ive bought some split window reduction boxes to fit to my beetle i'm going to use the beetle gbox so I need to flip the ring and pinion.
it seems pretty straight forward but is there any tricks?

yeah I'd like to know too, for my Country Buggy resto. Do you have to do any shim/measurement work, or just flop it over?

Oh. So it's not a Saturday-afternoon-with-a-few-beers job then, huh

I'm FAIRLY sure that the chev corvair eng. spun the "wrong" way & this procedure would need to have been done for the VW's that were hot-rodded with this engine. There prob are none here but if you post this query on a USA site somewhere (samba??) you may find someone who has done it & who may offer some advice.

why would you have to take out the pinion and reset the gears?
I would have thought you'd be able to take out the diff turn it around reshim it then put it back together?

Marcel I agree, check your other topic about fitting kombi axles.

Position (pre load) of crown and pinion does have to be set in two dimensions. They have to be positioned so the sideways position is correct (shims each side of the diff carrier) and the longitudinal or fore-and-aft position is correct (shim the pinion).

When flipping the diff the manual recommends that the sideways position needs to be measured and checked (you need VW special tools for this) - I guess this is assuming the diff wasn't noisy in the first place though.

However, having said that, if the tranny is quiet (no diff howl) and works OK, about 90% still seem to be good of you just flip the diff carrier and the diff carrier shims. Bit of a pain in the ass if you fall in the other 10% though....

If you have access to the tools check it. If you don't and the trannies good just flip it (and the shims) and hope your luck holds?

That's a good point! Although I blue as a final check after set up rather than during the setup process (although I do have the factory tranny tools...).

The best/cheapest/safest solution when flipping a diff carrier (and shims) and not having access to factory tools is to blue to check engagement of ring and pinion!

Good point!
