Bolt size

ver silly but easy question.
I have a 63 beetle. I need to replace the rear wheel cylinders. What size is the bolt, that locks the drum onto the cv? it is seriosly huge, And my
largest scket 31m isnt bigg enough..

you will need a 3quater inch drive to no adapters or reducers half inch WILL snap off. Then you can use a decent extension too

Know where I can get these? Been super cheap repco, and buntings.. No dice.. Even went to the dub place in Pendle hill who advices me a tool Place
across the road still no dice. I'm in western syd by the way.

I bought a 1/2 inch breaker bar from Bunnings and used with a 36mm deep socket bought from a local auto supply store, along with a 1m piece of
galvanised pipe as leverage.

The 36mm socket is sold by Most VW shops...
I know Micks Motors keep them...
If the nut has previously been off and has anti seize or Moly grease on the thread it will come off using a Metre or 5 ft piece of 1 1/2 inch pipe on
a breaker bar...
Mine was on VERY tight..
snapped off My Sons favorite 1/2 inch Sidchrome breaker bar
YIKES... had to use a 3/4 inch breaker bar...
and swing off the end of it...
Best to undo that nut with the wheel still on the ground too..
so, a 1/2 inch breaker bar May snap off....
but a 3/4 inch one won't... You will of course need a 3/4 drive 36mm socket...
You can't use an adaptor for a 1/2 inch to 3/4 inch socket....
they are around 217 foot lks torque which is very High...
They also MUST be tightened the same way...
otherwise they WILL come loose...

This is just a generalisation not having a go at Shokwave or anyone else but why the hell do people even try and use 1/2" drive sockets on axle and
flywheel nuts.
If you can crack them loose without breaking even a quality 1/2" drive breaker bar then the nut wasn't torqued up right.

I used a 3/4" 40cm long? breaker and a smallish steel mallet. Tap, tap, tap, tap, off it comes.
I tried it also with a 1.5m long metal pipe jumping on it. Didn't work
even with a person on the brake the wheel still slipped.
Rattle gun also is not very effective. I find the small breaker/ shifter/ T handle and a small steel mallet to work better than anything else.

This isn't true. I use a 1/2" drive 600mm long breaker bar on mine and it works fine. Just requires a large amount of elbow grease! My impact gun is
1/2" drive so it made sense to buy a 1/2" drive 36mm impact socket. I use both the rattle gun and breaker bar to get mine off.

Trust me, you're not doing them upto 220ft/lb then.
undoing the drivers side from that torque almost lifts the front wheels off the ground.
IRS isn't as critical, I just go by feel but swingers need that torque to keep the oil seal in check.

my old 03 took 3/4 inch with a 3m scaffold pole to get that to crack
