So my 65 beetle drops a Bit of oil, I have been told it is the Pushrod tubes but when I looked under it looked like gearbox....I am yet to clean it
off to get a definate answer. But main question... If it's Pushrod tubes....how much are they and which type are best? And if it's gearbox...what is
a most common cause?
I'm only fairly new to dubs and still getting my head around them so any help is much appreciated! Cheers
Is it engine oil or transmission oil leaking?
I recently chased an oil leak around my beetle. Started off as an oil covered gearbox, which was caused by a leaky rear main seal. Replaced that and
then oil was leaking from the very front of the gearbox. Found out that i was missing 2 out of 3 of the detent plugs in the nose cone. So i plugged
them up, and then a few days later i was finding transmission oil dripping down my rear right brakes and tyre! Removed brake drum which was FULL of
tranny fluid so i replaced rear axle seal there. Also cleared the breather hole in the gearbox nose cone which was causing pressure build up in the
transmission, causing all the leaks. No more leaks, not even a drop.
give it a GOOD clean with a pressure hose
If it is the engine oil leaking at the gearbox join then it will be the front engine seal that lives under the flywheel
Easy fix but means engine out and flywheel off. You may as well do your clutch now for another $350 or so
If it is push rod tubes - if it is just one then you can get spring loaded ones of varying quality
If it is more then it is engine out as the head clamps then to the case.
If it only drops a bit - stop looking
Thanks guys! I will give it a good clean and let u know. I'm on the south coast Nsw, where would I best to get seals etc? Are they something supercheap or autobahn can get or not?
