Hey guys, threw part of a rod through the crankcase in the girls car. So got my hands on another 1200 and have pulled it apart (waiting on a 34mm bit
for flywheel)
Just looking for some hints when installing new bearings, possibly new rings. Thats pretty much all ill be doing then put her back together.
So yea anyone whos done it before, tips would be useful

anything that could help, tricks of the trade..
For a start, do you know if the other 1200 case has been line bored? If so, to what size? .25mm, .50mm, .75mm or 1.00mm oversize? Before buying any
bearings, make sure you know what oversize you need to buy.
Are you using your old crank or ther other crankshaft? Same deal again. Has the crankshaft been ground in the past? If so, how much undersize?
What is the condition of your the cylinders and pistons if you're going to just use new rings? Do the cylinders need honing? Are they scored?
If you're happy with all the above, the main thing to look out for is to ensure you have all five bearing locating dowels. Four on the left case half
and one on the right half for number 2 bearing. When refitting the crankshaft, make sure that the bearings are correctly orientated, and that the
holes for the locating dowels line up with the dowels. Otherwise when you come to join the two case halves together, you will bind up the crankshaft
and damage the bearing shells.
Next to check is the alignment of camshaft to crankshaft. The camshaft gear has an "O" and the crankshaft gear has two dots. The "O" on the
camshaft gear goes in between the two dots on the crankshaft gear.
With new rings, ensure that the ring gaps are staggered properly. Oil ring gap (bottom ring) faces up and the upper and lower compression rings are
about 120 degrees from the top or below the piston pin opposite each other.
That's all I can think of at this stage at this time of night.

Hey mate cheers, yea re grinding the crank as it spun a rod bearing.. and will be sending the case out to get suited for oversized bearings.
Ahh yea it was, but found a vw shop that had a better tool for locking up the flywheel other than a flatty..haha cheers for the help mate!
