Which carb for draw through Turbo?
miikeboyle - May 28th, 2011 at 11:22 AM

Hey guys,

Just wondering if anyone knows which are the best carbs to use, or a list of carbs compatible for a draw through turbo setup?

Thanks
Mike

Im just dreaming, but yeah the idea is to turbo charge a 1641. I saw this carb: http://www.lowbugget.com/2_barrel_and_4_barrel_carbs.html

And just wondering what other carbs are popular for the purpose, or even what carbs are good for a blow thru setup

In a draw-through application, the carb works in exactly the same way that it would on a naturally aspirated engine. There's atmospheric pressure on the outside and vacuum on the inside. What this means is that any carburettor will work, all you should need to change is the jetting. SUs are popular for draw-through, as are Webers, Dellortos and Holleys.

Most people use side drafts due to space restrictions and much simpler manifolds.

I used a DHLA Dell on mine, pretty simple to jet, I did also have a HIF center float SU but you need to know the black art of needle shaping to tune them.

Big 2inch plus SU's are common on draw through turbo on a lot of cars.

If it's a 1641 then just get hold of the carb and turbo from Renault 5GT turbo. Won't take much to set that up and even if you have to get it from a UK scrappy and shipped I reckon it may end up cheaper for you :)
