ok
the old run around 1500 bug started popping & farting agian so off with the LH rocker cover & rocker gear & tighten the nuts for the No. 4
side of the head.
they are pulling out!!
I dare not torque the studs right up as it just dont feel right.
The threads for these 2 studs are now like 3mm longer out of the top of the nut compared to the other 2 studs.
can i put 2 nuts on each stud, tighten them against each other & try and wind the stud back in or can i take the offending studs out and try and
loktite them back in.
does anyone know any stop gap measures?? to avoid taking the motor out and stripping the topend & restudding??
thanks
Does the motor have case savers now?
If it does then you are pulling the case saver out of the case. - not good
If it doesnt then i guess you are just pulling the tread out - still not great
To fix, i reckon you already know the answer
spose i knew the answer all along.
but..
as this vw is more a toy than anything else, i'm gunna try all engine in otions first. got nothing to loose apart from a bit o time.
thanks
If the case does not have case savers and u dont want to pull the engine all the way down: there are studs available which have larger size thread with a cutting notch that can be screwed in, to replace old thread/stud (with the heads still on). Thread size is smaller than a case saver so in future if u rebuild it wont be a problem.
cool
sounds like just the thing.
before i start pestering local and www vw places, do you know what the're called??
thanks
Sorry mate no idea what they are called
I suppose You could try loctite... won't hurt anything.. just wondering what torque are You doing up the studs/nuts. as its only 23-24 ft/lbs
which isn't very much... remember magnesium-Aluminium alloy is very soft & brittle, You could overdo them very easily with a normal 1/2"
drive ratchet... best of luck.

the oversize stud works sometimes but in the end its still only a temporary measure.
The best method is to pull the engine and fit case savers and loctite and or smaller 8 mm studs while your there.
And while your there you can or might as well rebuild the entire engine, if you want to keep it for a while.
Hi
The 1500 beetles had very weak cases, dont waste your money on one, tyr to find a 1300 or 1600 twin port.

thanks guys.
money is tight - single income & mortgage.
