Correct door handle
Luke - June 26th, 2011 at 10:36 PM
Hi Guys.
Here are the two door handles from my 1969 type 1. They are different. The left one has a closed solid handle and vw markings. The right one has on
open handle, bigger lever and no vw markings.
Which one is correct for the 1969 bug.
Thanks

As far as I know, the left one is correct for a '69 Beetle. I had the same ones on my 1970 1500 Beetle. I think that the right hand one is from the
late 70s?

HI
The Left hand one is genuine VW
The RH long lever - is an odd looking one...... ??
IF no VW markings. then probably aftermarket...
the early ones had the two finger indentations... for Your fingers to go... that one looks too long and has a bump on it instead of grooves to put
Your fingers...
all later models all had the short plain lever as far as I know..
and all VW products usually have the VW part number and identification marks...
all mine are later ones.. plain triggers..
maybe it was for a VW thing??
Brazilian or Mexican ??

Other way around Lee.
The 73 onwards Beetles had the 2 finger triggers like this

I've got a box full of door handles from bugs I've wrecked theres 4 different types of fatchick handles that I've come across.
1500 beetles 68 to 69 and some 70s had the solid ones like the left one, 70-72 had a short trigger like the left one but have the hollow handle like
the one on the right and 73 onwards have the 2 finger triggers.
the one on the right with the humpy trigger I think is type 3 or 411/412 but I'm not sure what years.
Because the all interchange and they do break after 40+ years or doors get swapped from accident/rust repairs so many bugs don't have the original
handles any more.
I didn't realise the difference till a bug I bought in the late 90s had one 1500 handle and the other a 2 finger trigger handle.

Thanks guys. I thought as much. Left handle correct. Had to be sure. Going to send it off to the chromer, so on the search for a 69 correct
handle.
Great diagram Lee.
Stupid question but are the handles side specific? Will they fit either side?
Thanks
Luke

yes they will fit either side but one has the key in it

Both sides lock on 68 onwards cars.

Hi Luke
no they are the same
I've always had locking handles on both sides of My beetle
I don't think there are any blank handles??
as in My pics You can take the locking barrel with tumblers out
and put into another handle...
