having a look at this months volks world mag... good article on getting more cooling from your oil cooler. the thing is, how hard is it to get a type 4 oil cooler?

Not too hard, I've got two :D

Try dropping down to your local wreckers. They shouldn't cost too much (they don't look very impressive) but they are a pain to get out, you have to remove a few things before you can get to them. You might be able to buy one from a VW specialist out of a broken motor.

broken motor ? just watch out for broken motor bits in cooler !:D

Would be best to get a cooler off a motor that is already running , if poss.

I was of the general impression that type 4's and type 4 bits were hard to get? perhaps i am thorougly mistaken:)

Type 4 the car - yes very hard
Type 4 the motor - no was also in 1974-1982 combis

Not as common as the common as muck Type 1 but still easy-ish to get

Yoy have to modify you fan shroud to put it on. As it is wider you need to cut and widen the cover on the back

I've done the type 4 oil cooler trick before & so has my father, & for the hassle it's not worth the effort. The temp guage didn't change & the shroud ends up hard up against the fire wall.
After all the effort a simple external cooler is the only way to go.
