Ok,
Who out there has re-built starter motors?
I'm re-building my spare starter to go into Andy. Can get brushes and bushes no problem. I can clean the commutator myself, and auto elec. can
replace the contacts in the solenoid.
My problem is the field windings are apparently gone (some insulation missing) and I think the clutch on the starter I’m using is gone also (starter
throws out and spins but doesn’t drive).
Are either of these parts still available, or repairable?

The contacts in the solenoid are a do-at-home job if you have a medium degree of aptitude.
The field windings are something else entirely, I suggest you either have it re-wound professionally or find a different starter. Rewinding is kinda
expensive usually ($60-$200 depending on starter, 10 years ago) and its often hard to find someone who can do it. As an alternative, if its not too
far gone, you may be able to clean between the field windings, re-shellac them and bake it to harden the shellac.
I have no idea about the clutch though.
Thanks KruizinKombi,
re-winding the field coils (the outside ones in the housing) doesn't look do-able to me.
Trying to fix the insulation between them may be an option. I'll look into it.
As for the solenoid, how do you get the back off?? It looks like the wires are soldered to the end cap preventing it coming off?

Andy, yes you have to unsolder the joints and then undo the two screws to get the end cap off.

Cheers Dude!!
Hey, you'll never believe the starter I lent you is back in Andy!!! I put another solenoid on it hoping to fix the problem but no go.
I'm convinced it's the drive clutch slipping now so it's dead by the looks.
I have another re-built one (yet to install though) and will keep an eye out for a spare clutch for this one.
