Hello friends,
Anybody know what it means when your regulator start clicking loudly at high revs? Can it be cured by sanding the points?

regulator? or distributor? regulators dont have points...(correct me if i'm wrong...) If the points are pitted, then try to file them down a bit (a metal nail file can help) otherwise, just buy new points... they ain't that expensive...

Voltage reg clicking means you need a new one!

what unity said. If its clicking then chuck it and get a new one. Preferably the solid state type. You can file the points but you will change the voltage settings and possible fry the battery or burn out the generator. Both more exy that a new reg

Could be that its worn down too far and at high revs = high Voltage = charging the battery OR in Your case = Not charging the battery..... best of luck... [/size]

all of those things + could be an external problem as one set of points protects against wrong polarity & one the charge rate (in Lucas anway, not sure exactly what is in a Bosch, take the cover off & watch what is going on while engine running

You could adjust the Voltage Regulator , but I'm sure the average VW owner without any test instruments could do it successfully.... cheers

my t3 was doing that about 12 months ago turned out to be the geny was shorting out inside itself repaired geny all ok

I swapped my regulator with another one and the problem was solved. The point gap on my stuffed reg was much bigger than the one I have on now. Just wondering wether the point gap was the problem or the other components in the reg that were stuffed. If it is the points, could they be adjusted? remebering that my problem was not charching the battery but was not regulating the voltage.
