CV Bolts?
Smiley - August 18th, 2011 at 05:54 PM

Hey people.

What size are the CV bolts on a type 1??

Chasing length and diameter.

Don't have any bolts but I'm converting my car to IRS, so I'll go and get some allen headed ones tomorrow after work.

Cheers

I'm not sure if the stock ones are.

I will be buying high tensile.

All socket head cap screws are grade 12.9, the closest lenght you will get is 50MM and are readily available from any good engineering bolt supply shop.

Cap screws, which is what you need, are very high tensile.........12.9, I think. Normal HT bolts are grade 8.

I just bought some as I wasn't sure I would get my originals off in one piece - turns out I was right :punk:

I am told by a reliable source that the hex head were for the kombi and the type 1 is an 8mm spline socket head. The bits for your socket wrench are a bugger to find and cost over $20 in a specialty tool shop. Or you can spend $50 and get them in a king chrome kit at Bunnies. For me the rest of the kit was no value.

So the Germans did quite a few things right - but I reckon they muffed this one. Take the smallest cup bolt you can find with a shape which is awesome for catching grease and dirt - and stick it on the dirtiest greasiest part of the car you can find - voila you have the cv bolt design brief for a vw.! LOL pulled mine just last night so it's still fresh.

Hi
I have never had any problems with mine...
then again I degrease under My engine and gearbox frequently
[when the painted bits get dirty..lol]
the bolts are about 48mm long excluding the head...
all mine were the splined type and the splined sockets are usually available at many of the VW parts shops...
I also have some allen socket types...
I think the allen headed ones may be the best.. especially if You have excellent quality UNBRAKO allen keys...
I have seen the special washers for sale in the USA VW shops...

You can get 50mm Hi tensile allen headed bolts from bolt shops...
a dab of loctite on the end of the threads may give You piece of mind... lol as I have heard of them coming loose..
I've had mine on & off a few times and never had a loose one

Triple square (twelve point) bits are not too hard to get. Definitely available from Snap On, and there is not much chance of ever braking it. You can just buy the bit, and use a spanner on the end to drive it.

I also bought a socket with the allen key in it...
much better than using an allen key with a large socket for leverage...

snap on should be sold in shops...

only ever seen them in Mechanics tool boxes.. lol

beautiful tools.... lol
