1800 kombi oil leak?
type82e - August 11th, 2003 at 09:12 AM

we looked at a 74 camper on the weekend and the owner says that he had a heap of work done to the engine recently reco head, clutch pressure plate and exhaust
but now its started to leak oil around the back of the engine and every couple of weeks he has to remove the starter and drain the oil out of it?
this ounds like a lot would this be a rear engine seal or gbox or something worse?

Sounds worse to me.
Engine seal would be lower than the starter motor.

If tghe starter is filling with oil all i can think of is a cracked case??

As blue says sounds very strange.
As for what's leaking, you should be able to pick the difference between the engine oil and GB oil, is the engine or GB oil level dropping??
Firstly the clutch/bell housing is drained so shouldn't build any oil up in there. The oil that leaks from there will make the whole bottom of the motor wet with oil. If it filled up the clutch would have no hope of working either.
A seal leaking will only give a weap of oil (unless it's been going for some time). I think type 4 motors have a plug in the end of the cam, this may have poped out. If that's been out for some time I'd be concerned it's been running on very low oil pressure.
As for how the starter fills with oil :alien

our first Kombi had the drain hole between engine & gearbox blocked to mask oil leak, ringgear on flywheel was picking some of it of & centrifugical centrigugical force was throwing at least ome of it into the well sealed starter motor recess making for somewhat erratic starting, whatever, it is engine out out out:(
