Hello friends,
My indicators are both working but at iregular intervals. The flashing would start with one big pause and then the flashing would get faster and faster and then become iregular. Could a dud fladsher relay cause this or would it be somewhere else in the circuit? I also suspect that it might be the alarm i have installed. since this problem started, the indicators dont flash when i activated the alarm. My flasher relay is a cheap 2 input unit that is connected to my bug.

what brand is the flasher unit? I have been having a similar problem with the new one I bought, I think it was a Tridon unit.

Mine are irregular too, more so for turning left than turning right !?!?!

Mines only been like it since I put the tridon unit in, when I had a Hella unit it was fine!

I read somewhere that some flasher units are sensitive to the resistance of the system and some are not. Could explain what is happening.

Yeah, you'll notice they flash quicker if you've got a bulb blown - that's to let you know that it's blown. The wiring in old cars can cause some strange effects because of this. Pulling off every connector you can find, shining the post with a typewriter eraser and refitting it can often help - but corrosion travelling up the wires is another problem.

The flasher relay brand is a cylindrical looking type that has mexico written on it.

A bad earth is also often a main affender.
This can make then flash faster with out having a blown globe.
Try cleaning all your terminals and also pull your indicators apart and clean the globe sockect.

What year? sounds similar to a friend's 73 superbug with some rust. water had got in the relay under the dash. replaced relay after removing the relay case and drilling holes, fix cause of leak asap.

First of all it sounds like you have a 6 volt electrical system. Is this true.

With a 6 Volt system its critical the wattage output of your flasher unit.

most of them are 2 x 18W which means that you must have 18Watt 6 Volt globes fitted to your blinkers all round.

try this first and check all your globes as well as the Earth system like Nathan says.

no vw54 my kombi is 12V.

I suspect it's corroded connections and wires, but as the indicators do work re-doing the indicator wiring is a very low priority, I've got other more important things on the list at the moment.

Even with 12 Volt they could still be different Wattage globes so check that as well...

together with corrosion and a good earth.

I was running a Hella unit, was awesome, was running sweet. Then my blinkers cut out all of a sudden, and i took it out, after some pretty hectic pulling out of its socket ( it was stuck down with silicon) i found out it was filled up with water. I opened it up, drained the water, and gave it another go, after soldering the plastic shut on the base of it, and it worked, for 2 mins, then it just wouldnt work again. I bought a new unit, and now it flashes really fast some times, and slower other times, but not irregularly often, just now and then it will go fast.

So i dunno, when u buy a flasher, just make sure it is correct, by checking the numbers for the terminals ( dunno what the numbers stand for ) but yer, match it up, and it will work hehe

Waiting to here if robs Hella unit fixed the prob.
