Rear main seal

Gents

Has anyone ever had an issue where the outer lip on the rear main was chewed out.

I just had the engine out to do the dual carbs and a better clutch and pressure plate and thought i would just check the seal while was out.

When i pulled the flywheel off i found pieces of seal, i pulled the seal and the outer second lip is chewed out. I measured the distance that part of the seal run against the flywheel and its running rightbin the middle of the radius on the flywheel, i checked end float and thats ok.

Just wondering if anyone has seen that before, plus who has a seal i can come over and get now lol.

Firstly No One knows Your Location

Please fill in Your Location...

the seal needs to be pushed further into the block...

the Genuine VW Tools are stepped to push the seal in past the end of the case...

EVERY VW parts shop would have a spare...

just about every VW owner who works on their engine would also have a spare....

Sometimes when the case is line bored the main bearing flange is skimmed to fit to the case allowing the seal to run too far forward (ie on the radius) and thus distorts the seal and prematurely wears it. in extreme cases we have had to remachine the radius and rear of the flywheel to get around the problem. As Lee says the seal is recessed when fitted correctly.
