shifter plate orientation
binner - September 26th, 2011 at 01:50 PM

Hi ,quick question about shift plate.
Is the ramped tab on the drivers side or passenger side?. I swear it was on the driver side when i took it out.

I'm having trouble orientating it after putting in a short shifter. It is now jumping out of reverse..
thanks in advance.... IC

Cant remember but did you replace the intermediate bushing on the shift rod. The movement may have been the straw that broke the camals back., also check the rear shift rod housing

the ramps on the Lock out plate are on the LHS not the drivers side..
it stops You putting it into reverse without pushing the lever down...

BUT ONLY ON SEMI AUTOMATICS...

the NYLON shifter bush below the gear shifter is usually worn out by now in most cars... its inside the tunnel..
its under $10 for the Nylon bush and clip...

highly recommended You replace it...

its a fiddly job...

the first time You move or take off the lock out plate it can take a lot of tries to get it correct again...
HOURS.... LOL

cheers

Note the position of the ball key pointing forward and the small raised tab on the LHS (this pic is US oriented)
I did this recently and couldn't get it right until I got the orientation right and spent about an hour adjusting it. Read up on adjusting procedure - it's more art than science. I have always found reference to the "ramp" confusing and prefer to use reference to the small raised tab.

put it into hard second while the bolts are in but loose, hold it there and tighten it up firmly but not tight. lightly chck all gears, then tighten. adjust as necessary

that is how I do it...

it can send a sane man crazy in an hour Phil... lol

The so called Ramp or long bent side goes on the RHS on Manual cars so You can select reverse ONLY when You push the gearshifter Down...

manual cars with a straight shifter don't have the pivot pit on the bottom ball ..
early models had them as the gearshifiter was bent...
and automatics have them to keep the electronic points in the correct position...

The little ramp must be on the right hand side and going up to the front.

Adjust the gears by putting it in second, tightening and testing.
