Rear drum brake nut
cam070 - October 3rd, 2011 at 06:52 PM

I went to start dismantling the rear end of my bug today only to find out I didn't have a socket big enough. So now I need to order a socket, my question is what size do I need to order?

Where are you cam070, I have one if you want to come grab it. I'm out Liverpool way, just PM and we can go from there.

Kev

P.S. I am going in near Newtown tomorrow.

its 36mm and You will need a 3/4 drive...
I have broken sidchrome 1/2 inch drive bars undoing these...

they are Very tight... and need to be...
make sure You lubricate the thread when You put it back on..
grease or neverseize...

Any more tips on getting these suckers off. My half inch drive breaker bar isn't looking so straight anymore.

With the potential of having to but 3/4 drive gear not particularly appealing, I ended up paying the local mechanic 20 bucks to come over and sort it. Money well spent I reckon.

Onto the next stage.....

Don't forget to tighten them up to the required torque, or the drums won't last long.

Good idea, forgot to mention... if you do not wanrt to buy, i have asked the local vw shop to undo my nuts (crack them) for me at the shop when i didnt have the tools, now i have a 36mm 3/4" drive and 5' extension, works a treat, no issue... ever
