Rebuilding Front End
Smiley - October 4th, 2011 at 05:16 PM

Hey everyone.

I'm about to do a full rebuild of my front end, new king and link pins going in.

I'm just wondering if people can give me a basic run down of what's required.

Do I need a press to disassemble the spindles?

And how do I measure and set the required camber for the front? I know it's with shims but how is it measured?

All help appreciated, thank you.

you need to purchase a manual , you will need it to set up the link pin shims , yes you will need a press to disassemble and reassemble the king pins along with the correct adjustable reamer and guide.

Reamer and guide?

I might have more of an idea once I blow them apart tomorrow.

The kits I have have got new king pins and brass bushes and new link pins, shims and the bushes they run in.

After you press the bushes into the link pin carrier you will need to ream them to size using a reamer and pilot, the bushes are undersize and reaming them aligns the two bushes so the king pin fits correctly.

Thanks for the help chaps.

I took them to work today, pressed them apart, sandblasted and cleaned them up. Tapped the new bushes in and went to the local VW bloke and he was nice enough to let me use his reamer. So the bits are ready for paint and reassembly now :tu:

Expect pics in my build diary
