Installing a late model dizzy to 1600dp Super
super72beetle - October 28th, 2011 at 10:32 AM

Hi Guys.
I recently purchased a late model distributor (022 905 205s) to go in my stock 1600dp '72 Super.

I have taken the old one out at TDC which has spark plug one pointed at about 2 o'clock. (A lines match up)

I have put the late model dizzy in but the rotor (still at 2 o'clock) is 180 degrees opposite the markings on the new dizzy which is at about 7 o'clock.

The new dizzy only goes in one way and if I try to match up the markings it would mean the vacuum canister would be at the front of the motor (Which I know is wrong)

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Simon

some times you can just move all the spark plug leads around one or two spots in the cap , to get it to work.

Thanks Ian.
Gut feeling is something's not right but I'll give it go and line up spark plug lead 1 at 2'oclock.

Thanks again.

Quick fix is do what Ian said, spin the dist 180degrees move the plug leads around 2 post each and ignore the index line.

The reason you have this problem is the drive cog has been installed 180degrees out of whack.
Proper fix is knock the pin out and spin the drive cog around....happy days.

It doesnt really matter where the distributor ends up or the index line, as long as the rotor is at #1 lead when #1 is at TDC and the order goes 4-3-2 from there.
It's more just an orientation thing to clear things in the way that its setup like that.

example. I had one of mine out by 90 degrees cos the condensor hit the fuel pump and clever me put the drive gear in a few teeth out

movethe drive gear as per above so the vacuum advance diaphram is in correct position and allows movement and adjustment

Thanks Joel.
That's great advice. Not keen to knock out the pin out or disassemble the distributor. I don't know why I got so hung up about the index line:grind:
My really old distributor (a 114 model) had the markings for 2 o'clock.
Will let you know how it goes.

Ignore what I said above, I just had a brainfart moment.

DIdn't occur to me to look up the model number, I was assuming it was late bug but its actually from an 1800 type 4 Kombi engine.

They have the vac advance can at the back like type3 to clear the shroud so that's where your problem is, so you will just have to sit it where everything clears then arrange the leads to suit.

Hi Joel.

I know the dizzy is not a standard type 1 affair but is 100 times better than what i've got. I've also been told it is one of the better units you can put into a type 1 motor.

So what you are suggesting is to line it up as I would the old one (i.e to fire cyl 1 at around 2 o'clock) and ignore the index mark (at 7 o'clock).

I think this will work.

Yep that will work fine.
The distributor or engine don't care about the orienatation, just as long as the firing order is correct.

I've seen a few bugs on ebay with the distributor installed 90 degrees out with the vac can facing the left side of the car.
As long as the leads are in the right firing order and it's timed right obviously you're good to go.

Hey Joel.
Did as you suggested and it works a treat.
Many thanks for your advice.
